Chicago Crime Analysis

Whenever we hear about crime statistic or the rate of crime in different parts of the United States, one state and city that is always mentioned is Illinois, Chicago. It is usually used as a tool for politicians and media outlets to combat racial inequalities, and police brutality against blacks and minority group by presenting skewed statistics about black on black crime, or poor living conditions in predominately black neighborhoods. But if were where to looks at UCR data and compare the crime trends in the city of Chicago over the period 2012-2014 with the national average for the same period we can see there is a small steady decline of violent and property crime. For example, in the short video provided it showed how several families that once lived in Chicago move out of the cities into the suburbs for the safety of their family. Law bidding citizens are moving out of the city and the only people that are left are the gangs/criminals and poor resident who are unable to move. Another way the impact of crime rates have on Chicago is the image of the people living there, which are predominately blacks and minority groups. So whenever crime is mention a visually of a black man or women is usually followed. This type of negative propaganda feeds into the stereotype of no good, criminal behavior, black people. So these communities are less likely to receive the public support needed to rebuild their city and homes. When looking at crime totals across the country, we must keep in mind that the FBI specifically warns against ranking cities. Comparing cities based on their totals or rates can lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses, which then can often create misleading perceptions adversely affecting communities and their
