Chicago in the 1900’s were deadly. Open shootings, muggings, and illegal breweries, all started with Mobsters. Most people do not know who Johnny Torrio is, but gangsters would not be the same without him. Born in Italy, then traveled to New York, but his life as a big time gangster started in Chicago.
Johnny Torrio lived a rough life. His dad died when he was two years old, and his mother brought him to New York. His mother remarried a man who owned a grocery store that was secretly a illegal liquor store, which influenced him to becoming a gangster. Later, after he went to Chicago, he took over the crime organization, or gang, the Chicago Outfit. In New York he started the gang the James Street Boys and eventually allied with a gang called the Five Points gang. James Colosimo owned the Chicago Outfit at that time, which would eventually be Torrio’s gang. He called him over because he knew that Johnny Torrio could stop some blackmailers from blackmailing him. Later, Johnny Torrio wanted more power and hired Al Capone to assassinate James Colosimo so he could own the Chicago Outfit.
Johnny Torrio played a big role in Chicago. He was the leader of the Chicago Outfit, and opened many bars and casinos. He even got tricked into purchasing a bar and was sent to jail for nine months. Before that, he hired Al Capone to kill James Colosimo, which could have been a threat to certain people. Chicago would not be the same without him. Al Capone would not have grown into the greatest gangster if it were not for Johnny Torrio.
Johnny Torrio was a revolutionary gangster. Although he is not well known, he made a huge impact on Chicago. Johnny Torrio made Chicago a more dangerous place and became rich in illegal ways.
