By: Sumera subzwari Where was this sight? Chichen Itza is located in Mexico, in Maya, 75 miles east from Merida, the Capital of the State of Yucatan. It is also 2 hours away from Cancun. Which civilization built it? The sacred city of the Itza, called Chichen Itza, was built by Mayans. Mayans were an ancient civilization of southern Mexico and the Central American countries of El Salvador, Honduras Belize, and Guatemala. They were also called the Itza. The Toltec influenced the Itza in architecture, and religion, which meant human sacrifice on a large scale. In influencing the Itza in these ways, the Itza could build Chichen Itza. Where was it Built? Chichen Itza, in English, means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza.", which roughly describes where it was. Mayans called it this as the location was very close to water wells, and one water well was called the Sacred Well. Chichen Itza is roughly six square miles, and is considered one of the most important part of the Maya culture. Some of the buildings that were built are called: The Red House , the House of the Deer, the Nunnery and its Annex, the Church, the Akab Dzib, the Temple of the Three Lintels, the Observatory, Kukulcan's Pyramid, the Temple of Warriors, The Ball Court, The Group of the Thousand Columns, and the House of Phalli. Is it still standing? Chichen Itza is the largest, most complete set of ruins with easy striking distance from Cancun and has many buildings that are still standing, but not all of them. Out of the six square miles where hundreds of buildings once stood, only about thirty are left, with the rest mostly mounds. There were three sections that the Chichen Itza was built: the Mayan area, the Toltec area, and another group called "The Old Chichen". Although it is said to have been built about 600 AD, some buildings are still standing! What was its purpose? The purpose of Chichen Itza was to provide a living calendar that would represent the Mayan
