It is a made up of three sestet and decasyllabic lines with a rhyming schenme of a 'ababcc' pattern. Tremmendous feelong is generated by the directness and the plainness of language. The poem is written entirely in monosyllabic words. The way it is written with a lot of control and restraint is incredible. It feels as if the poet has no time for anything but stark truth The use of 'I' and 'my' in the poem delineates that it is a very personal and self-centered poem; cut off from the world..The repetition of the last line of each stanza-"And...done", emphasizes the poet's inability to escape his execution. It is an elegy encasing several metaphors that allow readers to resent the with compassion the plight of the poet.
In the first stanza, Tichbourne makes use of antithesis to establish the circumstances of his life. he reflects on his short life, one which ended before he truly lived. On one side, there is the image of vitality, life, viguour and energy on on the other side is the association with pain, worries and coldness which gives the idea of death. Further he proclaims that "mu feast of joy is but a dish of pain" Within this powerful statement, the poet realized that his last meals were not that of nourishment, but was that of pain of great emotional suffering. Tichborne suffers to keep within him
