about the damage that may have occurred over childhood. These damaging emotional and physical effects make these children grow up to be impaired adults that could lead to things such as rash decision making, repeating the cycle of abuse, and decreased ability to control anger and other emotions. Emotional abuse is defined when a tragic event damages your self-esteem leaving you feeling like you are helpless and scared. Examples of emotional abuse include making unreasonable requests to show dominance, making threats to scare the individual, lying, and not paying attention to them and harshly criticizing them. Most children that are abused will show signs such as defending the abuser, denial, and isolating themselves from others. You may see the abuser do things such as yelling, swearing and name calling, humiliating, and degrading the victim. These damaging effects lead to depression, increased anxiety levels, and increase participation in risky behaviors.
Neglect, meaning failed to be taken care of properly, has a negative effect on many young children around the world.
Neglected children are 7.2% more likely to commit a crime then those who were not neglected. The decision making process has not been developed correctly in neglected children because of the damaging emotional effects they have faced, leading them to make rash and reckless decision in their life. The National Institute of Justice states “Twenty-six percent of these neglected children were arrested as juveniles, and only 16.8 percent for those not neglected.” This statistic shows that neglected children are more likely to commit crimes, even in their juvenile years. Because these children were never taught proper ways of how to act in society and their self – esteem has been damage their whole life, it leads young teenagers to believe that making reckless decision are okay because of the horrible actions that were made against them. As the children age, the emotional damage begins to takes a toll on these individuals leading them to make rash decisions, continue the cycle of abuse that was continued against them onto someone else, and lose the ability to control emotions such as anger and depression. These things combined together can lead them into a life of
crime. Physical abuse is defined as the use of physical force that may result in bodily injury, physical pain, or impairment. Physical abuse may include acts of violence such as striking (with or without an object), hitting, beating, pushing, shoving, shaking, slapping, kicking, pinching, and burning. Physical abuse is one of the most common links amongst the criminal population. It is easier to notice the signs of physical abuse because it can be seen on the victim’s body. You may see things such as bruises, welts, red marks, scars, and open wounds. They may also have more severe problems such as sprains, broken bones, dislocations and internal bleeding.
Children who have been physically abuse tend to develop a more violent personality because it is what they experienced living with their caretaker. If you look at crimes that contain violence, you will find that as much as 1,500 or more of the cases involved criminals that were physically abused themselves. Recent studies show that 83.8% of convicted killers suffered from severe physical abuse.
