Doctor Pleads No Contest In Teen’s Death
In Ohio a malnourished fourteen-year girl died after only weighing in at twenty- pounds and her doctor is pleading no contest for her death. The little girl’s name was Makalya’s who had cerebral palsy and was suffering abuse by her mother hands. Margaret Edward, who was the little girl’s doctor, is pleading no contest to three misdemeanors counts of failing to report child abuse and neglect on someone is functionally impaired. Makalya’s could not fight back against her mother, but her doctor could have and Makalya’s could be alive right now. The one fact that is really disturbing and that stands out in is this article is that not only is Makalya’s doctor and mother are being prosecuted, but so are three other nurses who worked with Makalya. Makayla has suffered from frequent bedsores and was severely malnourished and had also suffered from other signs of neglect. Ken Betz, who is the office director of the Montgomery Corners Office, stated that Makayla was one of the worst malnourished child that the whole office has ever seen. Her mother Angela Norman has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and other charges and was sentenced to nine years in prison. In my opinion she should have gotten more than nine years. Makayla died on March 1, 2011 and Edwards was her doctor since July 2010. There were three other nurses who are also being charged for Makayla death. The three nurses was actually responsible for Makayla getting care at home and did not report to authorities about how the home was a vile place to live and that Angela didn’t provide sufficient care or food for the little girl. Mat Heck Jr., who is the prosecutor, stated that Edward, who is a medical
