Assignment 1 – child and young person development
Give at least three examples of transitions that affect MOST children and young people and three examples of transitions that affect SOME children and young people, show how the transition may affect their behaviour and development.
1/ NURSERY - Separating from the family every morning may be difficult for both children and parents, especially the mothers. This transition brings a lot of changes into family life and may cause some angry or oversensitive reactions. Finally children can gain independence, maturity and social life experiences, which support their self-confidence and a healthy personal development.
2/ NEW SIBLING – A newborn could be seen by his older sibling as an interloper/intruder, when their arrival takes up a big part of parental attention and love. Older siblings can develop their patience, responsibility, flexibility and reach new independence through this change. After a while they can enjoy a special, close companion who stays with them for their whole childhood or maybe their whole life, if they have really good relationship.
3/ DEATH – Small children can’t understand the absence of a close family member, when they pass away. The child has lots of questions about this mysterious disappearance. It is good to answer these questions honestly and truthfully. The children can block things and people for a while because of sadness and anxiety. This experience should start an awareness of death and loss which is common throughout the population, so it is important be very sensitive when the children are given an explanation...
1/ DIVORCE – A parent’s separation may cause the child to move backwards in schoolwork or some psychosomatic disorders. The children often hold themselves responsible for the problems in the family. This can call for some professional help, even if only on a one time basis. If everything settles well, the child can benefit from the experience. They can
