Competency Standard III:

Through my teaching practices, I meet the competency standard for self-concepts and growing social/emotional skills by creating a safe environment where they can be themselves and discover their potential. Encourage independent activities. I offer love, understanding and patience helping them to understand their emotions.

I build a sense of self confidence by creating a safe environment where they can explore and yet be safe. I want them to be comfortable about who they are. Understanding each child is different and their needs are similar but yet different given the back ground their from. I try to give them a more positive self concept. I let them know how important they are, and they can do any thing. Our class motto is “Yes I Can”. I try to teach them about love and respecting each other and helping them to communicate their feelings and allowing them space to learn it. Provide opportunities for talking about self and family. Praising them for their accomplishments and for their independence to try something different. I never want a child to feel they are less than. I realize as a teacher I am the first partaker of what I teach, the children learn from me and others. Some of the thing they learn are not all good, but the bad can be a tool to learn from and do better. We all learn through our interaction with each other. And finally letting them know that they are loved.

CSIIIa

Some of the ways I support the development of self concept is I provide opportunities for the child to participate in adult activities in which he/she can manage such as passing out materials, placing chairs back around the table, passing out milk cups during lunch time, providing age appropriate material to challenge them not scare them but allow them to explore their potential. Providing opportunity to learn rules and the importance of taking turns.

CSIIIb

I guide young children in positive behavior, by first being an example of what I teach them. Teaching them the way we communicate can hurt or help someone. To share with each other, and not to be selfish. My philosophy is similar to what I teach my class. When I was growing up we did not have much, but was not allow to say we were poor. We were given rules and responsibilities when our parents left and we had consequences for our behavior. We were praised and loved. The teachers and neighbors were our parents when they were at work, and we had to respect them. I found my self loving my teachers. The way I deal with challenging behaviors is through communication. I first look at the behavior and listen to what they are saying. Then allow them to communicate their feelings, and allow them to talk it out with me leading them in a positive direction. Develop a relationship with the parents. We also provide therapist for those families that wont the extra help. Together we can.

I provide a positive relationship with the child through daily routines and interactions allowing growth in in their development of self and others. Each morning I ensure that I greet each child and parent when they arrive. In greeting the child I will always address the child by his/her name and encourage the other children to say good morning. I feel this gives the child and parent a sense of trust and security for a safe and secure environment and this acknowledgment makes the child feel special and welcome in the class. In the mornings I also have open centers where the children can go around and greet the other student and to move and work at their own pace. I also find some way to praise the class and each child daily. I provide opportunities for the children to always feel successful and proud of themselves. All children have different rates of development and different personalities. Knowing this can help us be patient. I show children that I really care about them by accepting each child as an individual. I help children with developing social skills, Self- control, problem-solving skills, and the ability to act independently.…

We encourage the children to make their own choices and for them to know that us as practitioners are there to support them if they so need it. In our setting we have 3 rooms the babies in the baby room are from 3 months - 2 years, so we plan activities that promote their physical, language and communication and their personal, social and emotional development but this doesn't always go to plan as they are so young so free flow happens a lot during our days.…

There are a few ways that I support the development of my children’s social and emotional skills and their self-concepts. For instance, I let the children choose on their own what they want to do in their free time, such as some children love art and they see that as a way to express themselves. A few other children may enjoy making new friends and being social, so they may talk somebody’s ear off. Some children are shy or get embarrassed easily, so I try to do things and help them work on warming up to their friends. Maybe they are afraid of talking in front of people during show and tell, therefore I may step in and start acting goofy and ask questions to try and show the child that I am there and that everything is ok. I try to support my children, and help expand their self-esteem.…
