Child Labor During the Industrial Revolution
During the Industrial Revolution, much progress was made in the production and consumption of goods. Because of the production and sales of so many goods, the entire continent prospered. This would not have been possible without child labor. Much of the progress during the Industrial Revolution was due to child labor. The benefits of child labor greatly outweigh the drawbacks because the economy improved, the factories gained money , and the children benefitted. The factories benefitted greatly from child labor. The factories didn’t have to pay the children much, so they kept a lot of money. They could also employ many children because of how little they had to pay them. Because they had so many workers under their employ, their production rate went up and they gained even more money. The factories could make many more products because of this. Not only did the factories gain more money but the whole economy improved. Because the factories made so many goods, those goods could be traded and sold to other countries, improving the economy. The factories could lower their process because they had so much money and the people would spend less money. Production rate also went up, so there were more products to sell. Child labor improved the economy greatly. The children also benefitted from child labor. They learned responsibility from having to go to work every day. The children got healthy from the physical labor they had to do. The homeless orphans were taken in by the factories and given a place to live. The children also provided for their families with the money they made. In conclusion, child labor’s benefits outweighed the drawbacks greatly. The factories benefitted, the economy benefitted, and even the children benefitted from child labor. The drawbacks of child labor include injuries in the factory and poor working conditions for the children but these didn’t even apply to all the factories. So, child labor was a great benefit to all of

One of the most significant social consequences during the Industrial Revolution was child labor. During the late 1700s up until the Factory Act of 1833, children as young as six were working on average 12-14 hours a day in factories for little to no pay. The conditions in factories were deplorable, and the child workers were frequently forced to work with dangerous, heavy equipment. There were many accidents in these factories that resulted in children being seriously injured and even killed at work. Orphans were often taken advantage of and used as slave labor. The young children who were not old enough to work with the machines, often worked as assistants to adult workers in the factory, who would beat them. Punishments like weighting, where a heavy weight was tied to the child 's neck while he walked up and down the hallway to serve as an example for the other children, were often used when children showed up to work late or did not reach their quotas (Child Labor).…

Having the children work as most of the labor force is the catastrophic idea because children were being beat (Doc B). “Sarah Golding was poorly and so she stopped her machine. James Birch, the overlooker, knocked her to the floor. She got up as well as she could. He knocked her down again. Then she was carried to her house, she was later found dead in her bed (Doc B)” explained by an unknown person who worked in the factory. They are kids if they are sick they can’t work as hard as adults that are sick. They should never be…

During the Industrial Revolution, child labor became a serious problem. The modern discovery of children working during the revolution is probably what led us to scrutinize it so much. There are some that would argue that child labor is down right wrong but there are also some that would say child labor was beneficial and harmless. In document 1, an excerpt from William Coopers testimony before the Sadler Committee has William Cooper admitting that he began working in the mills at the age of ten. He claimed that they working 16 hour shifts and were only allowed one 40 minute break for lunch. When asked about his education, it was found that Cooper can read but is unable to write due to lack of schooling. 16 hour shifts with only a short break and being deprived of an education may seem unfair but Document 3 argues differently. Document 3 is an excerpt from the Philosophy of Manufacturers by Andrew Ure and it states that of all the factories Ure had visited, he had never witnessed signs of beatings or exhaustion among the children. He claimed that children enjoyed the “light play of their muscles” and believes that children would thrive better in modern factories today than in schooling. This is a fairly unpopular opinion on child labor. People are quick to agree that child labor was bad but you must look at both sides. Yes they were worked hard, but would we have Industrialized if they hadn’t been?…

For many children, the Industrial Revolution had a negative impact on their lives. The children who had to work did not have a say in whether they wanted to or not. Since children were working about 16 hours a day, they were unable to attend school to get any education at all (Document 1). Because they were unable to go to school, they were never taught how to write (Document 1). Some children who did work in the factories were fortunate enough to learn how to read from family members at home such as parents, or older siblings. In most factories where children were found, they were beaten if they did not follow directions or if they have done something wrong. From all of the horrible working conditions, children were permanently damaged for the rest of their lives (Document 2). Due to standing the entire time they were working their muscles would stop functioning properly and their bodies couldn’t support the weight of their bones (Document 2). Many children have died working in the factories because they would get cut and then develop an infection (Document 2). Other times children have been caught in the machine and had their bones broken and their flesh ripped and children working with them would try and rescue them and get injured in the process (Document 2). This all occurred because the shaft to the machine was not covered (Document 2). Children were also being told that they would soon die because of the dust that would fill the air in the factories, being overworked and having an…

In a world view, a worker benefited from the industrial revolution as comparably American workers enjoyed 40 percent higher wages than their counterparts in England (Schaller et al. Pg.353). Their wages were higher than others but there were still negative effects. Working conditions were poor and dangerous to the workers and the people hired were not only adults but also children who were expected to work just the same as an adult worker. While workers were affected both positively and negatively, industries grew and increased the need for industrial labor. For example, the cotton industry grew and the creation of mill girls appeared, who worked in mills weaving cotton (Schaller et al.…

This time had both positive and negative effects, as even though the Industrial Revolution greatly increased productivity and made many advancement in technology, with more and more people could enjoy cheaper and more varieties of consumer goods, the negative effects were equally as enormous. Specifically, child labour, horrible living conditions and bad working conditions on the factory floor. It is debatable whether or not these were beneficial effects of the Revolution, as though it was terrible, it did bring light onto workers right and eventually brought in laws that meant that workers had better rights. In today’s world such bad working conditions and child labour is morally abhorrent. In fact it was the terrible working conditions and unacceptability of child labour which pushed for the change that eventually abolished child labour and improved working conditions in…

During the Industrial Revolution children worked extreme hours in very bad working conditions for very low pay, even less than what adults were paid. The Idea was that children were useful as laborers because of their usually small size. It allowed them to move in small spaces in factories or mines where most adults wouldn’t fit. They were easier to control and manage compared to adults. These children were most likely working to help support their families…

The child laborer stays away from the streets, helps their family meet their survival needs, doesn’t have to dig for food in garbage’s, and gets paid. A low wage, but gets paid! The person running the child labor business doesn’t have to pay a high wage for the child laborers because the children don’t go to school and wouldn’t know how much they are getting paid. All they would know is that they are working to survive. Another benefit is that children’s bones and ligaments don’t fully develop until they are an adult, so if they get injured they will heal quickly compared to that of an adult worker.
