Children are an important piece of society, their presence should be values and protected as they grow and mature. Children are unable to self-protect and are in constant need of their caregivers to provide their needs. When children need are unable to be by their parents, guardian and caregivers, then it is up to the Department of Social Services to assure that these needs are met and that these most vulnerable of citizens are safe at all times. Child protective services caseworker work tirelessly to assure this task is carried out and with the right agency supports this task can be enjoyable, meaningful and stress to the caseworker can be reduced. We have all heard horror stories of child protective services caseworker’s caseloads being…
The purpose of this evaluation is to find out if teenage girls who are preparing to “age out” of the foster care system have implemented the life skills they have learned upon completion of the GRL program. This type of evaluation is an impact evaluation, it is used to assess whether or not the intervention being evaluated has had the desired effects on its target population. This evaluation will support the GRL program facilitators in analyzing and measuring the effects the program has had on the girls’ overall choices and behaviors after completing the program.…
The Child Protection System and the Juvenile Justice system are interaction agencies in the Juvenile Justice Victim System. The systems mission is to protect children and render justice to the victim. The objectives of the two systems primarily concerns are physical abuse, sex abuse the mistreatment of the child, assault, neglect, and emotional maltreatment. The enormous amount of crime against children goes undetected due to lack of reporting to authorities. If there is substantiated evidence than the authorities will remove the child from the home and into protective custody, this is considered serious intervention; foster care services provide temporary safe home for children. The court system operates on the assumption that…
With my target group of children of child abuse, the primary level of prevention will be necessary. We need to work with the target population of the “at-risk” group and reach out to them with the proper resources to prevent future issues. Poverty, stress, job loss, family history, and mental retardation can all lead to causes of child abuse but no of these should be the excuses for such actions to happen.…
Data was collected from two adolescents, one currently in foster care, the other previously in foster care. Each completed an online interview, lasting under an hour, that consisted of six questions (see fig. 1). Some personal details were edited with the subjects’ consent to protect their identities. The aim of the interview was to gain insight into individual experiences in the foster care system and compare them to popular conceptions and research. Subjects were asked to describe, to the best of their ability, their experience in the foster care system, ways in which its structure had impeded them, and their experience with mental health. Lastly, they were asked what changes they felt could be made to improve the system.…

It is my belief that intervening effectively in the lives of these children and their families is not the sole responsibility of a single agency or professional group, but rather it’s a shared community concern. To protect children from harm, Child Protective Services rely on community members to report child maltreatment, neglect, sexual abuse, and physical abuse. Domestic violence is a devastating social…
Over the last couple years I have noticed a rise in deaths of child because of neglect, or abuse. Although this has always been an issue that has been around for as long as we can remember, with the help of the media it is more frequently being brought to the attention of many around the world. The CAPTA Reauthorization Act of 2010 which was known as the CAPTA (Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act). The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act was previously known to be an essential source for funding of innovative dependency court programs as well as funding for child welfare agencies. The purpose of the CAPTA Reauthorization Act of 2012 is to improve program operation and data collection over time. (J.R Marsh, 2012) Also to improve systems for supporting and training individuals who prevent, identify, and respond to reports of neglect, abuse, and maltreatment of children. (J.R Marsh, 2012) As well as strengthening coordination among providers who…
Families rely on the court justice system to provide security and protection from any criminals or offenders that may terrorize or threaten them. Without the help of the system, the protection and security of their children are in danger of being exposed to violence and abuse. With that being said, the family justice system’s current involvement in child abuse cases is ineffective when ensuring the safety and well-being of a child. It is crucial, as a society, to take further action to prevent anymore harm.…
Society and government seek both to protect children from abuse and to defend the rights of the family. Weighing those two goals and determining which is more important in a particular situation poses a serious challenge. Child welfare experts constantly struggle to balance the risk of causing psychological damage to children by removing them from their families with the risk of exposing them to physical harm by leaving them with abusive parents or guardians. This decision is especially difficult when the evidence of abuse is unclear.…
Domestic Violence is a problem of epidemic proportion in the United States. It affects everyone whether they are the victim, the batterer, or a member of society. Domestic Violence comes in the way of multiple forms and has expanded outside of the husband and wife arena, as in years past to now include violence between boyfriend and girlfriend, parent and child, and violence between siblings. In some states domestic violence is defined as violence between a boyfriend and girlfriend who do not live together but do have a child in common. Domestic violence affects every community. Largely affected are the law enforcement officers who are at risk of prospective danger by responding to a domestic violence call. Domestic violence is affecting younger children in grades as low as elementary school through high school. Domestic Violence shelters are available to assist victims; however, while shelters appear to be a capacity for the most part, there is a greater concern for the underutilization of shelters and why, when shelters are available, are they not being used?…

Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. Every year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States involving more than 6 million children (a report can include multiple children). The United States has one of the worst records among industrialized nations – losing on average between four and seven children every day to child abuse and neglect. 1, 2…
Growing up is an essential time for children because they look to their parents for safety, love, security, support, understanding, and nurturance. In addition, children learn a lot about relationships, life, models of good behavior, and early attachments are formed. When child abuse occurs in the home, it has a major impact on the child that drastically changes the family dynamic and trust is violated within the child. The impact the abuse on the child may be present for the rest of the child’s life, which will affect how the person interacts with others and possibly their own children. Studies have shown that nearly three million children in the U.S experience some form of maltreatment. Abuse can be physical, verbal,…
The issues of neglect and abuse in the foster care system is a subject you do not hear about every day. However, this is a real problem that affects millions of children living in foster care or some kind of transitional care system. 75% of children in foster care prior to leaving the system will have experienced sexual abuse (Sexual Abuse: An epidemic in Foster Care Settings). According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, nearly 475,000 U.S. youth reside in foster care, close to 30,000 leaves the system annually (Braciszewski & Stout, 2012). Research shows that 1.5 million children in America live in families that have experience domestic violence and 7 million of them live in families that have experienced some severe form of domestic violence (Ogbonnaya, 2012). Even though research indicates that the identified incidents of child sexual abuse has declined 47% from 1993 to 2005-2006, this is an issue of concern that the public is not fully aware of the magnitude and effects it has on young people. While the public is not aware of the depth of this problem, child sexual abuse is a prevalent health problem children face with an array of consequences to follow (Child Sexual Abuse Statistics).…
