A child’s biologically endowed personal characteristics, a warm parental relationship, social support outside the immediate family and community resources and opportunities all played a role in the success of Gary’s life. A child is biologically endowed with personal characteristics that will increase the chances of that child having rewarding school and community experiences, even though they might have a stressful home life. When Gary moved from school to school, he looked forward to meeting new friends, whereas John became anxious and angry. When a child has a warm personal relationship with at least one parent, then that in turn provides a nurturing resilience in their home life. Fortunately for Gary he received social support from outside the immediate family which also aided in his success as an adult. His rule-abiding grandfather who was in stable marriage taught Gary how to handle stressful situations. There are many factors that cause birth defects. Structural and functional birth defects are created by genetics. Structural birth defects are those that occur when a specific body part is missing or has formed incorrectly like spina bifida. Functional birth defects refer to problems with the way a body part or system functions, like Down syndrome. Some environmental teratogens that cause birth defects are caused by alcohol consumption and the use of recreational or prescription drugs while pregnant. Since currently there is no way to repair brain damage and it’s almost impossible to reverse birth defects, it is important to do what is possible to prevent these conditions. Brain development in children is directly linked to the level of supportive environments and affection they receive. Parents with Down Syndrome children usually need help in establishing constructive patterns of parenting and with adequate care, a positive environment and training programs, they will have the ability to thrive, whereas parents who don’t care and ignore the fact their child needs special care and nurture, will increase the need for management by society and more serious problems later on in life.
