Childbirth and Georgia State
My name is Shanel Fannin. I am writing this letter in regards to my Fanicial aid suspension. Being that my academic progress is in review I would like to fully explain the events that transpired within my life that led to my acedemic downfall. I intially enrolled as a fulltime student at Georgia State university Fall of 2012.While attending school I also worked part time at a fast food resteraunt called Sonic pulling in forty hours a week.During Fall semester I was able to maintain my grades in school while working a very demanding job.I came into this college experience with high hopes and determinaton of being successful.I am futhermore appealing my ineligibility for financial aid because of the unfortunate circumstances that occurred during my Spring semester of 2013.

I unfortunately live in a low income household of five with everday struggles of looking after my siblings, paying bills, and maintaing the household. Neither one of my parents work so therewere a lot of responsibilities that I had to uphold to. I am the first person between both my parents that has taken the oppurtunity to attend college.

Their were two events that occured this past semester that caused a magnitude of emotional stress which consequently effected my academic progress at Georgia State. The first event occured January 5th, 2013. I had a termination for my pregnancy. I was previously aware of my pregnancy Decemeber 2012 during the end of my Fall semester. Taking in consideration that I live in low income household having a child during that point of my life was not a wise choice to make if I wanted to continue attending school and working part time. After my operation I developed symptoms of post partum depression that substantially impaired my emotional well being. Before my actions of this event I did not not consider how much this would affect my life and emotional development. It was very hard for me to cope with the choice I made of having an abortion. It began to be very

Growing up my mom has always encouraged my siblings and I to continue our education to as far as college. My mother never really got the chance to attend college because her family could not afford to put all their kids in school. She had seven siblings and an extra bill for school was not something her parents were able to afford. I consider myself really lucky to be alive in a time where there are so many opportunities to be able to afford college. If it were not for scholarships and financial aid, my mother’s story would be repeated once again. Through financial aid, the door for a college career is opened for me and I’m willing to enter it. My biggest motivator to push myself academically has been my…

Today I received a message in my student email about my academic progress. I was denied Financial Aid due to my poor academic performance my 2015-2016 semester at Mesa Community College. The reason for not meeting academic requirements the previous semester was because of my lack of organization with working, sports, and studying. I take full responsibility in not putting my academics before sports and work leading me to write this letter. I truly believed I could juggle working 20 hours a week as a swim instructor and also be a student-athlete for Mesa Community College while maintaining strong grades. I soon found myself struggling in classes and doing poorly on exams because I was not using my time correctly and pushing my school work to the side. In high school I worked as a swim instructor and ran cross country as I am now, I put little effort into studying and did what I had to do to get by. Those poor habits followed me into college and are now backfiring with proof through my GPA.…

As I moved on into my junior year I was voted into being Treasurer for our school’s FBLA-PBL. I also got an invitation into National Honor Society. I filled out of application and waited for the letter of acceptance or denial. At the time I felt great about my academic standing, 3.6 GPA, mostly all honors and dual enrollment courses. Needless to say, it came as a shock to me when they rejected me. Their reason for my rejection as a lack of GPA, at the time the requirement was a 3.5 GPA. I did not take this lightly, I thought to myself, “If NHS won’t accept me, what college would?’ I saw as all my friend began to get into NHS and yet I was struck with a black and white paper that simply said I was not good enough. I went on to ask teachers about what I should do. Shortly after I wrote a six paragraph essay taking about how I met the requirement for each one of the NHS pillars. I would have been so happy if I turned in that letter and they accepted me on the spot. However, the day after I turned it in I was called down and informed that the decision had not been…

Nonetheless, I went into the spring semester a stronger student due to the mistakes in the semester that instilled the strength and…
