Children and Television It is proven that children who watch television shows such as SpongeBob Squarepants score an average of twelve points lower on their I.Q. tests. Study suggests that watching just nine minutes of programs such as those can cause short-term attention and learning problems in four-year-olds (Fox News, 2011). Parents have become accustom to convenience and the sheer quickness of everything. The TV becomes a cheap and easy babysitter. Television becomes the one thing that parents probably would not know what to do with their children if it happened to go out. Parents want to spend time with their children while watching their shows, so they let the children watch programs they should not. Television has become a teacher to young children, and whatever they see and hear becomes something that they believe they can do. While it is easy to put children in front of the TV, inappropriate content and too much time spent watching TV can hinder their learning abilities. Society has become too rushed these days. Everyone is always on the go and barely has enough time to sit down as a family and enjoy each other’s company. There is always something going on or somewhere to be. Because of the constant hustle and bustle, parents are putting their children in front of the TV so that they can get their tasks finished easier. In some instances it is good to have that option to use, especially when you have small children. Some TV shows are better than others in that they are educational, and they teach your children rather than lower their IQ. SpongeBob is an example of an un-educational program. It is just a television program that is for entertainment purposes only. There are many pre-teen television shows becoming more popular as time goes on. Children are watching these shows more than cartoons any more. These shows focus on showing children how fun life can be. It also shows them how to improvise and how to solve problems, which can be an asset in the future. Parents are allowing their children to watch more inappropriate content in today’s times. Part of the reason that more children are watching those shows today is because television has become more lenient with their ratings. What used to only be on after nine p.m., when children should be in bed, now comes on at six and seven. Most of the shows watched now have at least one curse word and have many sexual references. Censorship is almost nonexistent. It seems that more programs are geared toward adults and few are suitable for children to watch. Children almost need to be limited to one channel and that would be the Disney Channel. The Disney Channel is one of the few that stick to a certain format concerning children’s shows. With the way that the world is changing today, it is hard to find an adequate television show for children and pre-teens. The younger children want to watch more adult shows because that is all they see. In most of the newer television sets, there is this device called a V-chip. The purpose of the V-chip is to limit the types of shows that you want your children to watch when you cannot be around. With the V-chip, certain programs with the television ratings not suitable for young children are able to be blocked with a password. It can be tricky at times though, because all children want to do is watch television shows geared more for older children. With today’s ratings, something that is rated TV-PG may be too boring for some children, yet the next rating is TV-14 and that will be too risqué for most children. Also, some television programs have low ratings, such as the news broadcasts, that can be unsuitable for children because of the random acts of violence that happen in the world today. Most television shows need to be monitored closely before allowing children to view them. According to Aacap.org (2011), “Children in the United States watch an average of four to six hours of television a day.” Time spent watching television takes away from important activities such as reading books, schoolwork, playing, and social development. Children have become accustom to coming home and flipping on the television. There are very few children who go outside to play, or use their imagination and play together inside, rather than sitting in front of the television, transfixed on what is being played. Most families let their children come home and watch TV, versus doing something that stimulates their brain. It has almost become a habit for most children. Depending on what they are watching, they also think that they can say and do whatever it is that they just seen on TV. Children feel as though they can mimic what is going on. It has to be true, because they are seeing it with their own eyes. They do not have the knowledge that we do concerning the difference between realities and make believe. Many different shows and movies are all about violence, sex, and obscene language. Young children are very impressionable. They assume that what they see on TV is normal and acceptable behavior. It is very important to monitor what your children are watching. Exercise is something that has been neglected by parents and children. Parents forget that their children need time to get out and have some physical activity. Children that sit in front of the TV for so many hours tend to have lower grades in school, read fewer books, and exercise less. In the 1980s and years before, children wanted to be outside. They wanted to explore and use their minds. Programs in those years were not as interesting as they are now. Now, you have the capability of watching anything you want on demand. Smart televisions are very popular right now. With smart TV’s, you can pull up different apps and load them onto your TV so that you would not need to go anywhere to even rent a movie. TV has gotten to where it can destroy some families and make them distance themselves from each other. In some households, the television replaces family game night. Instead of getting the whole family at the dinner table to discuss the day or any other topic they can think of, sitting in front of the television to eat and not talk seems to be the choice for most families. If that is all you do (watch television), then you will lose your sense of social skills. Social skills are mandatory in the world today. It seems like the world today is mostly made up of technology; almost as if you do not need social skills to succeed. There are computers that can do almost everything for you. Having social skills is what could set you apart from everyone else. It is very important for children to communicate well in the real world. Many parents are cutting back on extracurricular activities because of the cost and the time it takes to enter them. There always tends to be an excuse for everything. We can let them be just that; excuses, or we can move on and own up to it. There are many elements that can be put in place to limit the amount of television, as well as the content, that children are watching. Limiting the amount of television being watched is a good start. The key to enforcing this one though, is to limit the parents’ intake also. Start with one night a week where there is no television watched in the house. It is surprising, when realized, how much television is not a necessity. Another grand idea is to watch television together, in moderation. Of course, it should be programming that is suitable for the children. Game shows are great to watch with the family. It keeps the whole family in suspense, along with interacting with each other. By having children watch public television, you are setting them up for success. Public television is one of the few broadcast companies that do not have anything on their stations except programming that is suitable for young children. Some families categorize watching television all night, every night as quality, family time, but there is no interaction between the families. Children need to be challenged as well as receive positive reinforcement from parents to be individuals. Too many children today are becoming dependent on television. When a child is bored, they immediately go to the TV. It has even gotten to where they turn to the television out of habit; like it is something that they need in order to get through the day. Parents should promote physical exercise with their children so that they do not become lazy or dependent on the TV. While television seems like an excellent form of media that can provide endless entertainment for children, it needs to be limited so that they can develop properly.

The plebeian conundrum of the program has created a mass boom amongst a child who enjoys watching this show and also the countless medical professionals who are trying to dissuade parents. Research and countless studies have shown that 4 year olds who have watched nine minutes of SpongeBob, preformed only half as well as the children who spent the same amount of watching Cailou which is a PBS show or drawing. This conundrum is stated when head researcher Brown stated ”Technology is great, but we also want to explore how does that impact our kids”(Ln.38) When the children are asked to perform four tasks such as playing games that involve rules, the non SpongeBob watching kids did significantly worse than the children that did not partake in the watching of the show.…

These days just about every household owns a TV. There are many programs for children on the TV and we may think that it is harmless for a child to watch TV because they are “educational” or what not. True, some shows can teach your child some beneficial things such as learning to count or the alphabet, yet if a child is watching too much TV how can this impact the way children interact? And how much do you think is too much TV watching? Well according to the website (Kids Health from Neumors) they say : “The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that kids under 2 years old not watch any TV and that those older than 2 watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of quality programming.” We may think, well why this is when the kid is under 2 years of age how can it have an effect on them. Well the website (Kids Health from Neumors) they mention “The first 2 years of life are considered a critical time for brain development. TV and other electronic media can get in the way of exploring, playing, and interacting with parents and others, which encourages learning and healthy physical and social development.” I personally have noticed that kids in this day and age play less outdoors and when I was a child I always wanted to go play outside and use my imagination to create my own adventures. Now I see many parents struggle to get their kids to go outside and play. I notice many kids are addicted to watching TV or even more so be stuck on playing video games. According to (CNN.com) “ when you consider that more time is spent in front of a television means less time spent on homework or having stimulating interactions with adults or other children. In addition, late-night TV watching tires kids out so that they can't pay attention in school. Also, television hands kids all the answers, promoting passive learning and short attention spans. As a result, kids have difficulty concentrating and working hard to solve a problem.”…

As one of the issues that affect children because they watch too much television is health wise. The biggest issue that has been targeted the most is children becoming overweight. “The number of children and adolescents who are overweight or obese has doubled in the past 20 years in the U.S. according to the APP. (LimiTV, n.d.) Obesity has become a big factor and one of the reason why is due to children not having physical activity part of their daily routine. Parents sometimes relay in the television to be some sort of a babysitter in case they are trying to finish any tasks they have. Making this caused a neglect of interaction with…

A few months after my friend Angela, who lives in Santo Domingo, acquired access to premium channels such as HBO, Cinemax, etc. her eight years old daughter asked her one night: “Mom, are there poor people in the United States?” This could have been a joke if it were not so revealing. My friend realized that the luxurious scenes shown on television were not only giving her daughter a false idea about life in the United States, but they could also be creating unrealistic expectations in the girl’s mind concerning life in general. The same situation is faced by children and teenagers all over the United Sates. To a child’s eyes, television represents a parallel reality with its own rules and laws, a reality in which everything is not only possible and easy, but is obviously more appealing to his/her mind than the sometimes bleak or deprived household in which he or she lives. The problem is real and is not going away. On the contrary, it is only strengthened by the leading role played by television in the upbringing of children, as parents are forced to work long hours and depend more and more on the “electronic nanny” for the children’s entertainment. Unfortunately, the damage done to the children is serious and has unpredictable consequences in the long run.…

The cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is in hot water from a study suggesting that watching just nine minutes of that program can cause short-term attention and learning problems in 4-year-olds.The problems were seen in a study of 60 children randomly assigned to either watch SpongeBob, or the slower-paced PBS cartoon Caillou or assigned to draw pictures. Immediately after these nine-minute assignments, the kids took mental function tests; those who had watched SpongeBob did measurably worse than the others. Previous research has linked TV-watching with long-term attention problems in children, but the new study suggests more immediate problems can occur after very little exposure — results that parents of young kids should be alert to, the study authors said. Kids' cartoon shows typically feature about 22 minutes of action, so watching a full program "could be more detrimental," the researchers speculated, But they said more evidence is needed to confirm that. The results should be interpreted cautiously because of the study's small size, but the data seem robust and bolster the idea that media exposure is a public health issue, said Dimitri Christakis. He is a child development specialist at Seattle Children's Hospital who wrote an editorial accompanying the study published online Monday in the journal Pediatrics. Christakis said parents need to realize that fast-paced programming may not be appropriate for very young children. "What kids watch matters, it's not just how much they watch," he said. University of Virginia psychology professor Angeline Lillard, the lead author, said Nickelodeon's SpongeBob shouldn't be singled out. She found similar problems in kids who watched other fast-paced cartoon programming. She said parents should realize that young children are compromised in their ability to learn and use self-control immediately after watching such shows. "I wouldn't advise watching such shows on the way to school or any time they're expected to pay…

From a young age, American children are raised by the television; the TV has become their babysitter, their teacher, and their friend. The parents are busy and have barely any time to spend with their children. One parent could be at work while another is doing household chores, so who will watch the baby? Well, the toddler seems entranced by Elmo on television, so the stay-at-home parent doesn’t need to worry. At least that’s the mindset of many American parents. Quality time spent with their children is cut down, at first because they have no time, but later forming a habit in the child as the child gets addicted to watching television and would rather do that than spend time with his/her parents. At first, the parents think it’s fine; the shows are educational so what’s the harm? What they don’t notice are all the advertisements that are scattered within each episode. During kid’s shows, there are advertisements geared specifically towards children, easily manipulating their impressionable minds. They play with the child’s emotions, drawing on their feelings of jealousy and fear of becoming an outcast for not having…

Television can have positive or negative effects on our children. Children learn by watching and imitating adults. Television provides many influences for children that may not be what you wish for your kids. Television has become a "member" of almost every single family on our planet. And not just an ordinary member, but a very important one, because the time spent next to it exceeds the amount of time spent together with any other family member. You do not have to apply any efforts to talk or listen to complaints while “communicating” with it. You do not have to play with your baby son after a hard working day. You can simply turn the TV on and everything is done: kids are quiet, your wife is not complaining and you feel absolutely happy. It is so simple that it has become an integral part of the culture of every family. It is the only time, when a person can forget about all the family troubles and the failures of the day. The sofa opposite the TV set has become the place of “relaxation and spiritual unity” of the family. With television programs—and even a cable channel—designed and marketed specifically for babies, whether kids under age 3 should be watching becomes an important question. Television, movies and other electronics entertainment are not appropriate for children under the age of, even if they seem mesmerized by it.”(Miller, 2013, p326).…

Another big problem with television is that it may have a negative influence on children’s schoolwork. Every moment spent in front of a television screen is one less moment spent on more productive activities. In recent years, educators have pointed out a drop in academic performance, and one of the culprits may be television. When children are at home, especially alone, they tend to turn on the TV in order to be passively entertained. However, there is no learning going on when one just sits and watches TV. That is much easier than putting thought into schoolwork. Television can be addictive and cause children to spend more time watching TV than doing their homework. Children have to be monitored to make sure that the bulk of their time is spent on the more important activities, such as learning.…

In Brown and Hood’s (2002) article “Television and Children”, written in addition order mode tells the influence of television on children’s behavior. They explained how children spend most of their time watching television than any other activity. They added that children learn a violent and aggressive behavior mostly from television drama and cartoons. They also mentioned that watching violence and aggressive behavior make children less sensitive to it. However, the children’s response to television programs is not always negative. They sometimes learn positive lessons. It all depends on the way violence is portrayed on television. The authors say that when a child watches aggressive act in cartoon, he will become aggressive, and will try to imitate the negative actions (pp.139-140). I have a personal experience that demonstrates the effect of television cartoons on children. It was proved that the more negative actions they watch in cartoons, the more aggressive they become in their real life.…

Since the first television sets appeared in homes, in mid-twentieth century, television has grown into a phenomenon found in almost every household.
