In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete” the author Jessica Statsky showed concerned towards growing trend of parents promoting highly competitive organized games for their children. According to Statsky these games with adult and high standards are not less than a job for children especially when they need to enjoy. Statsky explained this thought with example that how badly such games create problem for children both physically as well as psychology. she further said that in competitions the fear of losing a game or getting hurt not only make a child to quit the game but also cause a lot of disturbance. Statsky believe that such games are meant for adults and not for children and especially for those who are strong enough to bear the pressure …show more content…
Such high games not only leave deep marks on their young and creative personality but also disturb them for their entire life. I believe that parents should not impose their dreams on children and let them live burden free life especially during their young age. I think parents should considered the consequences of such high level games before they make their children play them as these games only cause harm to their minds as well as …show more content…
I remember how I used to make enormous excuses just to skip my training sessions as I was treated out of space there and lack of my coach’s interest in teaching me and the race of winning the game which caused stress and mentally disturbance in me made me to lose the interest in sports. I totally agree when she said that such games are not less than a job for children as it as exactly a job like thing for me which I had to attend every day. I still remember I never went having smile on my face in my training center.
I think for reducing even eliminating this trend, counseling of parents is necessary so that they do not make their children to participate in such competitive games at such young age in fact indulge them in less tough and rule less games in order to make lives of their children better and happy. Parents should understand that their act of pressurizing children for such games make them to move more far away from the entire concept of sports. I believe that support of these games which only cause mental and physical stress to children should be end as soon as

Fewer kids play amid pressure.” by Machael Rosenwald, the author addresses an issue widely faced by many children. Quitting sports because of the pressure their parents put on to them to keep playing to hopefully become a professional “elite athlete”. A survey was taken to see what the top factors contributing to kids happiness was. The results helped to prove the fact that children aren’t in games for winning or being the best. This is proven when the article reads, “...low on the list: playing in tournaments, cool uniforms and expensive equipment. High on the list: positive team dynamics, trying hard, positive coaching and learning”(Rosenwald 3). As this shows, children enjoy not being pushed to constantly be the best. Instead, they prefer being encouraged and not being forced into…

Fear, Social Growth, Sports, and Young Children In Jessica Statsky ’s essay, “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” Statsky concludes that adults’ emphasis on competition in children’s sports can be physically, psychologically, and developmentally harmful for children. While this claim cannot be denied, many of her other claims (that children fear sports and that children ages six to twelve should never be exposed to competition) are debatable. Considering the importance of and amount of participation in children’s sports in America, it is important to understand that because of adult over-protectiveness or pressure, among other reasons, competitive sports have a troublesome reputation.…

In this essay “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” written by Jessica Statsky, Statsky states, “When overzealous parents and coaches impose adult standards on children's sports, the result can be activities that are neither satisfied nor beneficial to children’”(Statsky 236). Should the children be able to experience the fun, or should they feel pressured by their parents, coaches and etc? I believe the young children in between the ages of six and twelve should be able to experience the fun in sports and other activities. If the children are to worried about winning and as well as their parents they are going to feel all this pressure on them and that is not healthy. Being in a sport and taking it way to seriously than you…

“Children Need to Play, Not Compete” by Jessica Statsky is an explanation as to why children sports need to be less competitive. The stress of winning seems to be getting worse and worse as time goes on. Children are losing the love for sports because the fun is slowly but surely being taken away. Statsky states that, “even when children are not injured, fear of being hurt detracts from their enjoyment of the sport.” There are also psychological issues, which shouldn’t be a problem children have to deal with. Sports should be somewhat of an outlet, an escape for children to enjoy themselves apart from their everyday life, not an added stress. As Statsky ads, “Winning and losing may be an inevitable part of adult life, but they should not be a part of childhood.” Childhood is a time for making memories, participating in things that make children happy, and enjoying their time. Instead of stressing about winning, practicing, losing, making the team, and getting hurt, children should purely be having fun playing the sports that they love.…

In “children Need to Play, Not compete,” Jessica Statsky put emphasis on the hazardous effects on children when they play the type of sports designed for grownups. These sports are conducted under the rules and standards of professional practice which becomes too much of a burden for the young and growing children. Making them indulge in these type of extreme physical test makes them physically and emotionally in distress. Jessica furthers goes on saying that these sports sole focus is on winning and defeating the opponent team. This leaves the essence of the sports like learning to play as a team, maintaining your health and collaboration, behind. She also talks about the attitude of the coaches as well as the parents that they consider…

First off, children should be able to play these sports because there are so many benefits to them that are so difficult to replace in other ways. One of these benefits comes from the different values learned from playing these sports. One important value that I learned from sports is the value of patience. Playing on teams my whole life, I have learned that people will mess up and that you have to work with their mistakes. An example of a parent believing the benefits of their children learning important values outweighs the costs comes from an article by Mark Edmundson of the Washington Post. In his article “Let your Children Play Football”, he states that there are a few different learned values that come from football.…

After reading Romano’s and Statsky’s essays, I agree with Statsky’s essay. I agree that children need to play, not complete. The first reason that i think competitive sports are good for kids is that it helps build self esteem for example kids have to play the sports the right way and there teammates will say good job, nice try, and good play. So they build their self esteem by being on a sport team and by their teammates complimenting them. When you learn something you have self esteem for it so you are confident in it. “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times i’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why i succeed.” -Michael Jordan…
