Introduction:
The genre that I will be talking about today is Dystopian. I will be doing three films and one TV Show. These will be Gattaca directed by Andrew Niccol, The Man in the High Castle directed by David Semel, Hunger Games directed by Gary Ross and Children of Men directed by Alfonso Cuaron. All of these films have dystopian worlds they are all different in the way they present themselves. But all these movies have connections on the way the dystopian is ran and the people in these worlds. I will be compare Children of Men and Gattaca and show the connections that they have. Then I will compare The Man in the High Castle and Hunger Games with also showing the connections in them. After that I will show some of the similarities that …show more content…
In GATTACA you are separated into two groups at birth invalid and valid they are expected to lead different lives with different jobs. This at least was the same with male and female in the world today male’s are expected to go out and make the money for the family while the females will look after the family and stay at home and clean and cook for them when the father comes home. There are more similarities between the two films this includes the similarities between the way refugees are treated in Children of Men and how that relates to the way they are treated in the real world. That is what the directors do to try and show connections between these dystopian worlds and the real world. They are also similar in what the goal of the movie is. In both movies they have characters who are different to the dystopian worlds. In GATTACA Vincent Freeman an ‘invalid’ tries to break the system of GATTACA by posing as a ‘valid’ with the DNA of Jerome Marrow. He does this to be able to be a astronaut and go to space which has been his goal since childhood. He dodges multiply attempts to unveil his secret like the murder investigation along the way. All of these dystopian worlds are controlled by the government. The government use propaganda to help control the citizens of there worlds. This is done a lot specifically in the Hunger Games. The government know that without this propaganda they risk riots and the people of there rising up and changing the rules of the dystopian world. They restrict how much the people know they don’t see any of the evil crimes that they commit like the Man in the High Castle with executing and torturing people of the resistance they just show all of the ‘nice’ acts on which with the advertisements of grass fields and people smiling about the ‘New World”. With all of the movies there are four major groups. There is the people that run the place and the dystopian world and make the rules like President Snow in Hunger Games. There is the people who have benefited by the world and their rules . Like the people of Germany in ‘the Man in the High Castle’.For these people they don’t see the world as a dystopia but as a utopia. The different people have different people have different sets of perspectives on the world that they live in. Then there is the people who have been less well off because of the dystopian world like the ‘invalids’ in GATTACA. The last group are the rebels the people who are the ‘good guys’ the people who are trying to change the rules of the dystopian film like in ‘Children
