Chimneys Olga Lengyel Summary
The last example of loss of innocence can be seen in “ 5 Chimneys”. When Olga Lengyel first arrived at Auschwitz she didn’t know much about what was going to happen to her next. This shows the innocence that she had, as she lived in Auschwitz she quickly realized that the rumors she had heard about were true. This quote shows that: “I already knew that a selection meant the gas chamber,” (Lengyel 65). Olga knew that at all times she was at risk of being selected. This life she lived in constant fear showed a loss of innocence. At this time she became aware of death in the camp and now thought of it at all times. At some times she even gave into the idea that she had no chance and that by working hard in the camp was just prolonging the inevitable…

In the story All Quiet On The Western Front, the author Erich Maria Remarque uses the motif of blood and death to display a theme of withering innocence, and how soldiers had to witness horrible events through humanity’s downfall. Erich uses animals to show crude human nature, the story describes to us how “the belly of one horse is ripped open, the guts trail out. He becomes tangled in them and falls, then he stands up again” (63 Remarque). This passage of gruesome death shows decaying innocence by humans forcing innocent creatures of the land, to fight for their own selfish needs and ways. Throughout the story, Paul is thrown again and again into life or death situations, “I grab for my gas-mask.…

During the Holocaust, cruelty wasn’t something unfamiliar to the prisoners. As it is shown in the book Night by Elie Wiesel, Natzies didn’t use only one form of cruelty to rule the prisoner's life. When someone talks about their experiences in the camps they never say I was never beaten or my family stayed together the whole time, they say how hard life was and how every day they had to fight the odds to live. Cruelty isn’t always a physical thing, someone can be emotionally cruel to someone else. In this book, Elie gives examples of several cruel things not only the Natzies did but also what the prisoners did to one another.…

My first example is when Jem had to read for Mrs. Dubose after he destroyed her flowers. This shows that Jem lost his innocence because he realized that she had a lot of problems and had to struggle with them, and that he helped her to overcome those problems. Another example is when Tom was found guilty after Jem thought for sure he could not be found guilty. This took away Jem’s innocence because he was positive Tom would be found innocent and then he was found guilty by people who could tell by the evidence he was clearly innocent. A quote that supports that Jem lost his innocence is when it says “It was Jem’s turn to cry. His face was streaked with tears as we made our way through the cheerful crowd.” (Lee, 212) This shows that Jem sees that people treat each other unfairly and are satisfied with the results. These facts show that Jem lost his innocence because he sees that some people have problems that can even lead to death and that people are satisfied even if they know what happened is…

They took Elie’s freedom, identity, family, dignity etc. The Nazis treated Jewish people badly and used any kind of way to dehumanize them. “All things truly wicked start from innocence,” is a quote first said by Ernest Hemmingway, an author and journalist from Illinois. This quote is basically saying that innocence may start out as something seen as purity, in a person possessing this attribute, but eventually leads to immoral and sinful events. In my opinion this is because people who are said to be innocent are oblivious to the bad things that happen in the world, and when they do come to understand the evil in the world, they do not know how to react to it. Innocence can be lost in a number of ways but most innocence is lost through knowledge. In John Knowels’ A Separate Peace, the main character, Gene Forrester, gained new ideas and knowledge that replaced his innocence. This made him believe that he was better suited to live in his harsh reality of a life. In A Separate Peace, innocence and loss there of is one of the most apparent archetypes throughout the novel. Knowels uses this archetype to portray Leper’s philosophy of "Everything must evolve or it will perish." This philosophy is shown through the characters of Leper, Gene, and Finny.…

Both groups lost this trait, but in vastly different amounts. The littluns lost their innocence slowly and amongst their own clique. They did not lose it to the extent that the bigguns did though. The bigguns quickly lost their innocence when they made their first kill and then continued losing it during other events, such as when the boys murdered Simon. As the book progressed, the boys became more and more savage and switched from only eating berries, to killing animals, to killing people.…

The Innocence of an individual was easily corrupted by war, the sights and events faced by a person had the ability to change even the strongest of minds. When Mary Anne arrived at the camp, she was fascinated with every aspect of the war. “Though she was young, Rat said, Mary Anne Bell was no timid child. She was curious about things. During her first days in-country she liked to roam around the compound asking questions…” (91). She felt compelled to learn everything she could about the environment around her. Although it was dangerous, she pestered the men to allow her to visit a neighboring village, in order to feel how the natives lived. “Her pretty blue eyes seemed to glow. She couldn’t get enough of it.”(92) It is because of Mary Anne’s curiosity that her character experienced events that were not endured by the other men. When Mary Anne returns to the camp she couldn’t have been more content with herself, but she wanted more. It can be assumed that O’Brien uses Mary Anne’s continued curiosity throughout the chapter to show how it ultimately led to the corruption of her Innocence. “What happened to her, Rat said was what happened to all of them. You come over clean and you get dirty and then afterward it’s never the same” (109).…

In one of his dreams, his mother states that he is “innocent when [he does] not know,” but “already [he knows] too much” (Anaya 71). Here, Antonio identifies the act of losing innocence as a sin. He realizes that knowing is the same as losing innocence, and thus is a sin. His dream allows Antonio to realize that innocence only lasts until one grows into an adult, and that he has already lost innocence. Since growing to become an adult is an inevitable change, loss of innocence is also inevitable. His dream is able to portray Antonio’s fear of losing innocence and lets the reader better understand and connect with Antonio. As Antonio wonders what has happened to his innocence, Ultima states that “where the lonely wind of the llano sang to the lovers’ feat of [his] birth, there in those hills is [his] innocence” (Anaya 71). She disappears shortly after, leaving Antonio without an explanation and forcing him to find the answer himself. When Ultima says that Antonio’s innocence is the “hills,” she refers to the place of Antonio’s birth. Ultima implies that Antonio is only innocent at birth, when he does not know or understand anything. Shortly after…

At one point in each individual’s life, innocence will cease to exist. In the short story Going to the Moon, the little boy feels a sense of belonging and joy towards his teacher. Entitlement has played a large role in the protagonist’s life. The protagonist has not experienced valuable life lessons which allows one to recognize the evil in the world. Miss Johnson’s class fosters an environment that exposes her students to real world events, thus understanding the relationship between good and evil. Miss Johnson teaches her students about NASA, which introduces them to another world, other than their own. In the beginning of the short story, the young boy has only viewed the positive aspects of the world, allowing his vacuous perspective to continue to feel, “protected in that common love, in the importance I gained in sharing it, as if I’d been included in a game that could have no losers, no chance…

    English Film (the Village)

In his film The Village M. Night Shymalan creates a community which on the surface is a utopic society. This society was created by a group of people, “the elders,” who were disillusioned with the world around them and the violence and corruption in it so they decided to create a community cut off from this world in order to protect their children. However they keep their children within the confines of the village through the creation of an artificial threat; creatures that live in the forest around. They refer to these creatures as “those we do not speak of” and they instil a deep fear of them into their children. This was done because the elders wanted to preserve and protect the innocence in their children. However an idea that challenges me in this film is how the elders perceive innocence and what they believe is the nature of it. Shymalan uses various film techniques such as costuming, sound effects and camera shots to challenge the viewer with the idea of innocence. The Elder’s try to protect innocence with a lie and seem to feel that denial of base human emotions and the cutting off of curiosity in their children will sustain innocence. Because of this the honourable intention becomes a corruption of basic parental obligations.…
