As the Chinese influence spread throughout more surrounding areas of southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam all imported the culture in different ways, as well as to different extents. Japan has its own way that they imported the culture, while Korea and Vietnam had a similar approach. Japan seemed more independent and self sufficient than Korea and Vietnam. Japan and China had many contrasting responses to western penetration in the nineteenth century, including economic interaction - economically China suffered and Japan prospered, Japanese agricultural productivity increased while China’s did not, and China only accepted a small amount of goods while Japan accepted a wide range of goods- and political interaction - China went to war but Japan did not, Japan adopted western learning styles but China did not, and Japan heavily increased taxes on their people after 1890, while China did not -but had very comparable geographic traits – both had ocean borders – Japan was completely surrounded by water while China was bordered on a large percentage of itself, both kept their ports either fully closed, like Japan which completely isolated itself in the beginning, or like China which opened a only limited number of ports and cities to trade, and both conducted their trade – China with Britain, Japan with America – by boat across the ocean.…
The first way they differ culturally is their views on death. The Japanese saw death as acceptable and right, while the Europeans saw it as wrong and were more concerned on survival. The Japanese would often slit open their bellies and let them bleed out. Their views on death differed mainly because of their religions. The Japanese were Buddhist and believed in an afterlife, while the Europeans were Christian. The second cultural difference is the arts. Japan took pride in their arts with their poetic skills, and calligraphy, while the Europeans were less involved in the arts. The Europeans were more focused toward knights and the warrior class than the arts. The third thing they have culturally different is their views on women. The Japanese thought women should tough like their warriors and accept self-destruction out of loyalty to the lord or family. The Europeans saw women as fragile and inferior beings.…
Japan was isolated islands which helped them to keep away from diverse people. Do to the fact that they were not a diverse empire, rather homogeneous ethnicity, it was easier to control without having to know different languages, beliefs, or religions. In Italy they took a fascist approach, where people had no freedom, where they were imprisoned or put to death for not going with the dictator, and where the government limited culture. Likewise in China the Chinese Communist Party ruled, and it was founded at Beijing University in 1921, they ruled over the people very harshly and oppressed their nation with rules that were meant to keep the government in power even to this day. Japan on the other hand took on a democratic parliamentary monarchy in the early 1900’s under emperor Taisha. The upper class was ruled by oligarchies, but then in 1941 Japan was ruled by militarism.…
