The article also states how besides Chinese sending remittances back to their country in order to help their family, there is also a “reserve remittance” that is coming from China to the U.S. that is helping the U. S’s economy. Much of these “reserve remittances” are coming from the increase of foreign Chinese students in the U.S. who are receiving money from their wealthy families living in China. Once the Chinese finish their education, many of them return back to China because of the countries lucrative offers and the U.S.’s harsh immigration policies and economic downturn. The scholarly article showed that by the Chinese and Chinese-Americans having transnational connections in some sort of way with their origin across the pacific, they will influence each other and their perspective countries that they reside in, China and the U.S. The Chinese and Chinese-Americans influence economically China and the U.S. through investments, remittances, amongst other things. I’m in agreement with the article that this has occurred because of transnational connections. While reading the article I was surprised that the Chinese send a large amount of remittances to the U.S., mostly because of their sons/daughters studying in the U.S. This surprised me a bit because it’s usually the U.S. that sends the larger amount of remittances to other countries; in this case both countries send each other a large amount and help each other economically. The article also talks about how the transmigration have altered family structures by having an increase of “astronaut families” and “parachute kids”. I found this topic interesting and I believe the increase of a globalized economy is another reason for these types of families.
