Chinese Cinderella is an autobiographical about the early years of Adeline Yen Mah. This story expresses all the hardships and difficulties that she went through during her childhood. Adeline always had hope that things were going to get better in her life as she grew up and was determined to be noticed in her family. Hope and determination comes from staying strong, always believing in yourself, never putting yourself down and always looking at the positive side of life and just ignoring the negative.
Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah is an autobiography that emotionally and mentally links the reader to the events. Adeline’s purpose in writing this text is to inspire her audience to have hope and determination to deal with their own problems. This can be seen through the use of diction “All stories… Permeate your inner life and become part of you”. This shows that even though Adeline will allow the responder into her difficult childhood, she will demonstrate that with hope and determination one can live throughout anything.
When Adeline is at boarding school she hears her name being called out to have a boiled egg. But Adeline knows it isn’t her egg and she is determined to give it back to Mother Mary as she was scared that whilst she was eating the egg someone would of come and claimed it” Mother Mary, this egg is not mine… it can’t me mine” This quote show that Adeline is determined to give back the egg as she knows that it isn’t hers. This quote also exemplifies that she know her parents don’t care about her and that’s why she thinks that the egg isn’t hers.
