The story of the Hsu family with An-Mei as the daughter The purpose of the Joy Luck Club is to show the reader that people to reach their dream they have to make sacrifices and that their choices can change their fate.
The language Amy Tan uses imagery to show how things affect the characters and how objects affect them as well. In the story, An-Mei’s mother marries a man named Wu-Tsing and they move into the house with him. An-Mei’s mom was the fourth wife. One day all the wives were at the house and An-Mei meet the second wife. She gave An-Mei
a pearl necklace, that her mother insisted that she didn’t take. Her mother later that showed her the necklace was fake by smashing it. An-mei’s mother knew the sec0nd wife was only giving her that necklace just to get control of her.
Amy Tan shows symbol in the book to show the sacrifices that others have to make to reach their dreams. In the book way before An-Mei was born, her mother had twins. Resulting of being driven out of her home, she had to walk miles with her babies. In order for her to survive she left them on the side of the road with all her belongings she had. An-Mei’s mother also killed herself when she was married to Wu-Tsing to ensure that An-Mei would have a good life.
