In today’s society, nurses are responsible for interacting and caring for individuals from cultures of every kind. That being said, cultural competence in nursing is essential to providing quality care to patients. Cultural competence is “the ability to provide effective care for clients who come from different cultures” (Anderson, 2012). As nurses embark on the journey towards cultural competence, they must enhance their knowledge of the practices of the cultural groups they care for. By understanding the concepts of different cultures, nurses are able to keep the lines of communication open and make the end-of-life experience as comfortable as possible. This idea is further supported by the ANA position statement (1991) on cultural diversity in nursing practice that states “ Knowledge od cultural diversity is vital at all levels of nursing practice…nurses need to understand how cultural groups define health and illness; how healers cure and care for members of cultural groups; and how nurses’ cultural backgrounds can influence care delivery.” (ANA,…

The United States is a diverse accumulation of cultural backgrounds which can often set the stage for feelings of confusion, anger, mistrust, and a host of other emotions when dissimilar cultures disagree. Cultural competence in nursing can help eliminate these barriers and provide a platform for nursing to follow in the quest to understand a patient's culture and background. When a nurse takes the time to learn about a given culture prior to providing care, it conveys she respects the patient's right to their beliefs, customs, and culture. It does not necessarily mean the nurse agrees with their practices but it does show that she is willing to be open minded and deferential. It is the responsibility of the health care provider to take the time to educate themselves on the various cultures they may be exposed to in their work (Purnell & Paulanka, 2003).…

Since I was very young, I have always wanted to be a nurse. As a 5 year-old, I practiced nursing playing with my dolls and younger sister. Now, when I look back and remember what I was doing as a young girl, it reminds me the simple and unique quality of nursing, which is caring and comforting. According to Rogers nursing is "a learned profession, both a science and an art" (as cited in Masters, 2009 ). The art of nursing is the empathic drive that initiates the nurse to care when she see a sick person that has a need to be fulfilled physically and mentally. The application of the knowledge using evidence based facts is the science part of nursing. I am very interested in educating others regarding health issues. As a mother of two children, my experience with a pediatric doctor who has no time to educate his patient has led me to be determined to further empathize the importance of educating a patient regarding his/her unique health. My personal philosophy of nursing regarding the four major components of nursing (person, health, nurse, and environment) and their interaction among them are as follows:…

The American Nurse’s Association’s Nursing’s Social Policy Statement (2003) defines nursing as the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and population” (p. 6). Merriam Webster’s Online Dictionary (2012) defines philosophy as “the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group.” It follows then that a philosophy of nursing is the set of beliefs, concepts and attitudes that guides the promotion, protection, and restoration of health and abilities of individuals and groups of individuals. Traditionally, nursing philosophy is described using a meta-paradigm of four concepts – human being or person, environment, health, and nursing. Beliefs and attitudes about these guiding concepts are widely shared, but also deeply influenced by the personal experiences and values of the individual nurse.…

Nursing in its essence is the art of caring. It may seem a simple concept, as do works of art seem simple to the untrained eye, but in reality they are both complex forms of communication. “Art expresses what words usually fail to express and brings a sense of wholeness to the human consciousness.” (Chinn & Waston, 1994, p.20) Nursing strives to do just this; it strives to communicate where doctors’ jargon and complex medical treatments fail.…
