Chip And Norm Analysis
“In the future, everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes” (Andy Warhol). This is exactly what happened to Chip Gaines and Norm Abram, Neither chip nor Norm expected to be famous but that is what ended up happening. They both got their 15 minutes of fame and that ended up being their gateway to stardom with their own TV shows. I believe Chip and Norm Abram are two of the best carpenter/designers of their era. Norm and Chip both learned their carpentry skills in different ways. Norm first started seeing the carpentry trade as a young child by watching his father. Norm refined his skills remodeling and building custom homes with his father through high school and college vacations. Chip began learning about the carpentry trade by working at his family’s flooring store business. He also started playing baseball in first grade and when he was a junior and senior in high school he played second and third base on the varsity team (Norm, Colleyville). In spite of Norm and Chip both learning the carpentry trade at a young age that’s not what they planned on pursuing after high school. After chip graduated from Grapevine High School he got a baseball scholarship from Northlake College in Irving. After playing baseball for a year there he wanted to transfer to Baylor University in Waco. He …show more content…
They both grew up in different types of childhoods. They also came about learning their carpentry skills in different ways but ended up famous with their own TV shows. Before researching Chip and Norm, I never heard of them before. I have learned a lot on how they started out and how they got to where they are now. They have also made me realize that you never know when you will get your 15 minutes of fame. To learn more about these two you should watch some of Chip’s show “Fixer Upper” and Norm on “This Old House” to see why they are some of the best

To support himself, Mark worked as a manager at Pizza Hut for all four years he attended school. When I asked about his life as an undergrad, he told me going off to college provided some of the best years of his life. However, having to show up to every practice and event for football while trying to hold down a job and pay tuition proved to be more challenging he expected. Two years after he arrived, Mark decided to retire from the Central College team and transfer to the University of Iowa, home of the black and gold. The similarity famous thinkers is that they are all share creative minds and are all creative thinkers. Creative ideas are the foundation of creative process (Goodman & Fritchie, 2011). Famous thinkers base their ideas on searching for solutions to problem, need, or the way others think or view specific issues. When I think of famous thinkers a vast number of people come to mind. I have done case studies for numerous years but I found the case of John Nash the most intriguing. John Nash was mildly arrogant, charming, and an extremely gifted mathematician. He would scribble mathematical formulas and discoveries on windows in his dorm room, and overall he had impeccable intelligence. He developed a groundbreaking economic theory, to his impressive rise to the cover of Forbes magazine and an MIT professorship, and on through to his eventual dismissal due to schizophrenic delusions.…

A social rule is something that is often taken for granted and seldom discussed at great length. And, although we call it a rule, is not even really that. It’s more of a generally accepted standard for interactions. A social rule does not even have to span all of society but can instead be limited to smaller communities. One thing that many of these “rules” have in common is the reaction to them when they are broken. Many peoples’ whole days have been made, or broken, by others’ adherence to these social protocols.…

    Norm Violation

After doing the three norm violations for my midterm project in Social Psychology, I was really relieved. The entire nervous breaking act as whatever that will draw people’s attention to me made me partly pity myself. I pity myself for making me look like a fool, but nevertheless, it gave me a sense of joy thinking that I really did it not just for the sake of completion and to get good grades, but I did it because of curiosity and for the satisfaction of my inner craving for new adventure. And by doing the three norm violations, I came to conclude that we are all unconsciously controlled by the norms our society sets and that sank into the very depths of our minds making us live like robots. People nowadays are like robots, doing their day-to-day activities in a pattern that conforms to the usual norm in their society. No more thrills and excitement, no more craving for adventure, no more childish acts, and that’s all because we all wanted to fit in and do things aligned to what is tagged as “normal.”…

It was the day before the weekend started and the tables by the restroom were flooded with students getting study hours done before their weekend started, many were cramming in for their last midterms of week 5. It was quiet but not to the point where one would be able to hear a pin drop. Some students were conversing with their friends while others had their earphones trying to go into deep study…

    Breaking a Norm

People have their own beliefs and philosophies on what they consider valuable. Every person develops expectations, of what they consider proper. Sociologists call such expectations, norms, rules of behavior that develop out of group's values (Henslin, 2002, P. 45). The norm I chose to break, was the norm of eating certain foods with utensils. On one Saturday evening, I went to a restaurant called Olive Garden. I was dressed properly, and looked well suited for the restaurant standards. I ordered my food from the menu. I ordered a vegetable soup and alfredo fettuccini. Once I got my meal, I took the utensils wrapped in a napkin and put them aside. I started eating with my bare hands, and drank the soup straight from the bowl. While I was doing this, I wanted to see how the people around me would react. Thus, I would make slurping noises while drinking my soup, so I can get people's attention. Also, I would cough really ostentatiously to get people attention while I was eating my pasta and drinking the soup! I wanted to see how people react at different locations. Therefore, I first went to Olive Garden, and then went to a local low profiled restaurant, later that night, called Silver Lake. I elected to break this norm because, I wanted to know how essential eating certain foods with utensils are to people. Moreover, I wanted to see the confines to which others would react if they saw the norms of eating certain foods with utensils being encroached. Also, to see how different cultures and different backgrounds would react to my behavior.…

    Breaking a Norm

In our lives there are certain norms that we should uphold within our society. Whether petty or significant, these norms are a large basis for many of the ways we act, think and live. For this paper, I was given an assignment to go out and take on a challenging experiment to break a norm, detail my experience and record the reactions of observers. I figured what better setting to break a norm than downtown Atlanta at the Five Points Marta Station where there are a mixture of lots and lots of people to obtain reactions from. A norm, which is defined as a principle of right action binding upon the members of a group and serving to guide, control, or regulates proper and acceptable behavior (Webster dictionary, 2008). Within our culture, these norms are based on a general agreement of what are accepted as normal actions or mannerisms to the whole society. Before I began this experiment, I felt nervous and a bit antsy. I went and performed my norm violation on an elevator at the Five Points Marta Station in downtown Atlanta around 4:40 pm on a cold, windy evening as I was on my way home from class. The observers were quite diverse from different backgrounds and subcultures (black, Hispanic & white) comprised of school students and people coming from and going to work, going to other appointments or running errands and such. I got on and stood in the back of the elevator. I remained in the elevator for approximately 15-20 minutes going from Westbound to Northbound (up and down) entertaining different groups of observers getting on and off the elevator. I figured that I would be best off staying in the elevator for the time; this way there could be enough time for the appropriate variety of responses to the odd elevator behavior I was displaying. During that time I began talking into my pinky and thumb as though it was a cell phone. I held two conversations with myself in English and Spanish mixing it up. Unfortunately, I 'm not fluent in Spanish, but I took advantage of…

    Norm Violation

Field Experiment: Violation of a Social Norm. In this project, we were asked to violate a social norm in a public setting and make observations on what we saw and how people respond. The social norm that I chose to violate was simply that of common courtesy. I decided to take myself and my 17 year old daughter, Zoe, to a few of the Wal-Mart’s in the area and walk around, bumping into random people and saying absolutely nothing to apologize. We would take turns simply bumping into them and keep walking. Norms are a very important part of society. In our text book, norms are defined as “established rules of behavior or standards of conduct”. (Diana Kendall, 2011, 2008) Without norms, a society has no groundwork on which to stand. It would not have any, as the name promotes, normalcy. Norms are what make a society distinctive. Other notions such as ethnocentrism also tie into how norms affect a society. People who are ethnocentric often associate the norms of their society with that of others and through this; determine that their own society is grander. In contrast of these philosophies, I believe that all societies are normal according to their own norms, not the norms of others. In doing my experiment, I expect different reactions from the people I encounter, as well as totally different reactions from the same people who get bumped into by my daughter. I also expect different reactions from people based on the geographic location.…

One who enters the country to take up a permanent residence without legal authorization is referred to as an illegal immigrant. An illegal immigrant fails to recognize the legal procedures that are necessary to occupy the country they plan to enter. In some cases, immigrants that are permitted to enter a country are given clearance to reside in that country for an allotted window of time. This is referred to as a “visa”. An issue sometimes occurring with those who hold visas, is when that immigrant remains in the country long after the visa has expired. At that point residing in the country as an illegal immigrant. An important perspective within the debate over illegal immigrants is the influence they have on that countries economy. In the United States, it is argued that illegal immigrants take jobs from…
