Chocolate milk has become a large controversy in schools around the world. A lot of schools are considering banning it because of the sweetness that can cause weight gain in children that drink it. Even though it has been identified as having nutritional value, some still prefer to see it vanished in their schools. Some students are annoyed by this idea and are banning together to justify why the school should keep it. The school may have to consider an alternative solution for the chocolate milk that will accommodate the taste of their students. There is an alternative some schools have chosen to accommodate their students that want chocolate milk. They have added other sources of calcium such as yogurt and orange juice
to their drink menu. These high in calcium alternatives will give them more choices to choose from when eating their meals. In his article “The Chocolate Milk Wars-Verywell,”, Vincent Iannelli, MD, says, “ If you are going to give your kids chocolate flavored milk, you might offer it only as a once in awhile treat and not on a daily basis.”
It may be difficult for kids to adjust to not having chocolate milk with their lunch considering they’ve had the choice to drink it since they started school. When kids are given a choice between what’s healthy and what’s not, they will more than likely choose the most unhealthier choice because of it’s taste. Even though we may look at chocolate milk as being bad for our kids because of the sugar that’s in it, there are some that view it as being good for the children.
Some parents might welcome the flavored milk because it’s the only way they can get their child to drink it. Dr.Vincent Iannelli, MD, also stated in his article on “The Chocolate Milk Wars-Verywell,”, “What about all of the extra vitamins and minerals that most chocolate flavorings now offer? ” If we choose to do the research the good that has been found in chocolate flavorings can be given to our kids.
Serving milk to our students still is a great source of calcium, whether it is chocolate milk or white milk. Our schools are doing what they can to service our students to the best of their ability for now. Even though our kids may see this as a bad thing we must let them know we only want to make the best possible health choices for them.
