One more meal, one more day, one more chance to live in order to do what you must to survive the nightmare that has become your very existence. The Holocaust caused over 6 million people their lives by means of shooting squads, gas chambers, and work camps that were designed to starve them to death in a matter of months. All who entered these camps had an invisible hour glass that dictated how long they would be allowed to live. Some found themselves ushered strait to extermination while others were allowed to live for a little bit longer. Nothing comes without a price which was often collected in the most horrendous and incomprehensible ways. In the movies Out of Ashes directed by Joseph Sargent, The Grey Zone directed by Tim Blake Nelson, and Europa Europa directed by Agnieszka Holland we are shown how three different groups/individuals performed unspeakable tasks in order to survive and to help others to survive just a little bit longer. Out of Ashes is a story based on the life of Dr. Giselle Pearl, a gynecologist who was sent to the Auschwitz extermination camp where she used her knowledge and skills as a doctor to keep herself and others from the gas chambers. On the eve of his Bar mitzvah a young Jewish , Solomon, in the movie Europa Europa finds himself separated from his family after the liquidation of the ghetto he and his family are living in. Throughout the movie Solomon finds himself in several situations that requires him to masquerade as something he is not, and to hide with the utmost care the evidence that would expose his true identity.
