Choke Character Analysis
I am reading Choke by Diana López and I am on page one hundred twenty six. So far in the novel, there are two best friends who meet a new girl named Nina. Nina teaches only one of the girls a game she plays and now the girl, Windy, is part of “the breath sisters” a dangerous game, which can ruin a person. I am planning on predicting the future of Elena and Windy’s relationship and evaluating Nina as a character.

In this journal, I will be predicting that Elena and Windy will become distanced from each other and terminate their friendship now that Nina is in their lives. To begin, Windy already likes Nina’s presence in her life more than she does Elena’s. In the novel, Windy and Nina always agree, but Windy and Elena have trouble agreeing.

As one reads this quote they can analyze that Windy is sick of Elena ruining her new friendship with Nina by embarrassing her. Windy did not appreciate the fact that Elena felt like she needed to chime in to every conversation Windy and Nina had. Secondly, because of the friendship Elena and Windy have, they both get picked on for Elena’s nerdy activities. Windy recalls tripping on ice in front of the whole cafeteria, which was Elena’s fault and says, “Honestly Elena couldn’t even inline skate so I knew she’d humiliate us somehow. And this wasn’t the first time either” (López 21). One can understand that Windy is frustrated with Elena because Elena always tends to embarrass both herself and Windy. Windy is trying so hard to be in the in crowd but because of Elena’s foolish ideas, Windy is having a challenging time being apart of the in crowd. As a final point, the fact that Elena has not become mature yet bothers Windy. Windy describes Elena and says, “I keep waiting for her to out grow it, but Elena likes to hold on to things, not just habits but actual things” (López 6). As one comprehends this statement they can understand that Windy is …show more content…

In the first place, Nina is friendly. When Nina started at a new school she did not just try to squeeze her way into the popular crown. Instead, Nina decided to become friends with people who were just average human beings and were nothing special. Windy talks about how nice Nina is to her and Elena and says, “We’d never had an in-crowd worthy friend before” (López 20). From this statement one can understand that Nina is meant to be popular but instead she would rather be a friend to average people who have above average personalities. Nina cares about the people in the general public and not just a social status or the cool table at lunch. Secondly, while people are giving their speeches Nina claps for the people who did not do as well as the others. Windy thinks about how her speech was bad but yet Nina applauded her and said, “I’ve never been applauded before. I knew my speech was crappy, but I felt like a celebrity” (López 44). As a result of clapping for everyone, Nina made people feel as if they are important and they matter. Nina does not care if anyone had a crappy speech, so she claps for him or her to make him or her feel like his or her speech was magnificent. Next, Nina protects people when they fall down. After Windy and Elena slip on ice Nina helps them up and says, “No problem, every school has mean girls like that. If you let them get to you, they just act worse. Eventually,

Before the event occurred, Rachel was Melinda’s best friend. After the party happened, Rachel became rude and detrimental to Melinda’s identity: “Her eyes meet mine for a second. ‘I hate you,’ she mouths silently” (5). These simple words describe their new relationship. From this point on Rachel (now known as Rachelle) would only treat Melinda with hate and disregard. Melinda’s other old friends also follow Rachel’s lead, and treat Melinda the same way. These simple actions against Melinda eventually lead to a new, changed identity in Melinda’s life. Melinda perfectly defined her new self in 3 words: “I am Outcast” (4). The other deep carver of Melinda’s life has been Andy Evans. Andy was the beginning of this entire change, as he was perpetrator/aggressor in Melinda’s rape. He (referred to as it) continues to treat her with the same attitude and plays the innocent around her, creating clear confrontation and misery in Melinda’s life: “IT is my nightmare and I cannot wake up. IT sees me. IT smiles and winks. Good thing my lips are stitched together...” (46). Andy’s actions— along with her ex-friend's’ actions— caused a clear impact on Melinda’s identity. Their actions caused Melinda to change in various ways, the most painful being her reluctance to speak, and her metaphorical stitching her lips…

The contrast between the secondary characters of Vicki and Kelly, and the way in which each affect Andrew, only serves to highlight this. Andrew likens his wife to a “black cloud”, implying that he sees her as a stress, a pressure, a force of negativity constantly oppressing him, raining on his parade of nostalgia. Kelly, however, doggedly follows along with Andrew; more a cheerleader, and less a pessimist, the complete opposite to Vicki. Vicki utterly thrives on putting Andrew down, accusing him of having “just so many unresolved issues” and thus stripping him of his achievements, which, as evidenced by such reminiscences as “Cougars – B grade, scored 174 baskets one season,” he takes great pride in. Ergo, he feels that her criticisms are personal attacks against his existence. In response, Andrew begins to devote less attention to Vicki; he likens their relationship to that of “two strangers on the bus”. Whereas, “Kelly [is] beautiful”, and subsequently becomes the focus of his attentions and love. The fact that he thinks more highly of his dog than his wife suggests that he no longer views her as human. That she is, in his eyes, more deplorable than an animal. Not to mention that, through Kelly, Andrew regains some sense of self-worth and power: it takes only one whistle to command the dog. Hence, when Kelly can one day no longer hear him, Andrew feels possibly more unstable than ever before. Andrew, so disillusioned by his complete and utter loss of power, decides to take the dog’s fate into his own hands, perversely allowing him one final moment of authority over another living…

Firstly, Sasha’s uncle, Ted, was the only solid relationship she had formed as a child since her parents were always battling like wild dogs but eventually later in life, “he wanted nothing to do with Sasha. She was lost” (Egan 214). Considering the one person who was always there to save her has a child abandoned her, Sasha was left feeling hopeless about ever forming serious relationships. In addition, while Ted is in Naples, he tells Sasha “You’ve got friends all over the place, but I never actually see them” (Egan 230). By saying this, it shows that Ted is rather suspicions of Sasha’s claims about having many friends. Ted’s implying that Sasha may be lying about having all of these healthy relationships with individuals just so it seems like she’s doing alright. Sasha claims that she has friends because she wishes she could form solid friendships and since she isn’t capable of doing so, she lies. Likewise, Sasha talks about her significant other and how “he’d left her there, in Hong Kong, in the tall white building; she’d lingered in the apartment until its owner had asked her to leave” (Egan 223). Sasha was desperately trying to hold onto her boyfriend, Wade, in order to turn her life around and to achieve her goal of forming a serious relationship. Despite her efforts, Wade ends…
