Chokherbali Analysis
The novel Chokherbali was written by the Nobel Prize winner writer Rabindranath -
Tagore, and later came into movie adaptation directed by one of the most celebrated director of the Bengali cinema Rituparno Ghosh. Chokher Bali is a story about the physical and mental deprivations of young widows and their sexual frustrations.

Binodini is a young girl who is left to her own device when her sickly husband was suddenly dies at soon after their marriage. It was Mahendra, who was at first to see
Binodini’s photo when she was not ready for marriage yet refused her on account of her being unready for marriage. When the two were arrive, Mahendra and his new bride are constantly being off to being alone together. This happiness was not last long and Mahendra soon begins to see that Binodini is more of his type. An affair starts between Mahendra and Binodini, and this is soon revealed to Ashalata. Ashalata, was unaware of her pregnancy leaves for Kashi. Binodini, after realizing the self- obsessed personality of Mahendra, leaves Mahendra’s house. She pleads tp Bihari to marry her, but Bihari, true to his values, he rejects her offer. Binodini leaves the town for her village. She writes a letter to Bihari that she willl be waiting for him in Kashi. As she is leaving for Kashi, Mahendra comes to mend their relations, which she refuses.

The character of Binodini seems very real. The way she thought and acted seems so real. The way she thought and acted seems very much like how a real person would act and react. She becomes jealous after seeing the happiness and love of a newly married couple when she herself is doomed to widowhood. She is truly a character ahead of her times.
