Chore Day In The Jones House
Every Saturday growing up was and still is “chore day” in the Jones house and it comes early and lasts for hours. My parents believe in making us work for the things we want as well as showing them we appreciate what they do for us by doing chores. It is because of this, that I believe I have learned to work hard in what I am doing and to be thankful for the things that have been given to me. I think children should be raised doing chores not for money, but out of gratitude for their parents and all that they do for them, and just to learn a good work ethic at an early age. Since I can remember, my parents had us doing chores as kids. My parents not only had us do chores, but they did the chores too to show us how to do them properly and …show more content…
Discipline is something that not very many people have today but it is something that needs to be taught at an early age. Doing tasks by yourself means it depends on you to get the job done and not someone else. The writer quotes, “Let me confess that I wasn’t expected to lift a finger when I was growing up” (Smiley 275). Also, she states that she does not see the reasons that parents assign chores to their children. She states, “Mostly the reasons have to do with developing good work habits or, in the absence of good work habits, at least habits of working” (Smiley 274). Which she is correct in saying that that is many of the reasons parents have their children do chores at home. Not to say that she doesn’t have a good work ethic, but by not having to work for things as a child, the child will develop a bad work ethic from a young age. Many times the child will expect things to be handed to them, be lazy, and not work hard for the things they need to get done or to achieve things. By having our chore day on a certain day every week, it made us realize that it had to be done on that day so it needed to be a priority and come before other activities. This being said, it teaches that sometimes you cannot do what you want when there are other things that need to be done first. The author (Smiley) states in paragraph 2: “The practical result of almost every child-labor scheme that I’ve witnessed is the child doing the …show more content…
The writer even says herself that her husband has a much better work ethic than she does (Smiley 275) and he grew up working all the time with his father as well. Working as a babysitter has shown me the differences between a child that does chores, as well as a child who does not. As well as in my work environment, the attitude difference between people who grew up working and the people who have not. Since I have grown up doing chores, it has made working under an employer simpler. Although I may not always want to do the job I have been given, it shows them I appreciate them for giving me a job. This also teaches you, as stated earlier, to prioritize so that you can get done everything that you need to get done in a proper

“Chores allow children an early and sustained opportunity to experience responsibility. Independence and self-sufficiency in life are tied, ultimately, to mastery of two types of responsibility: personal responsibility and social responsibility” (Rowland, 2000, Brown University Child & Adolescent Behavior Letter, 16(6), 1). Though it can said many times, different ways that chores can help your child it is also said that you should never ask your child to do something that you yourself wouldn’t do and they should be used by busy parents to spend more quality time with their child. Essentially helping both the child grow from the responsibilities and allowing the parent to spend more time with the…

When I first started reading the book I had a hard time following it, I think it was because I just didn’t understand his style of writing at first. I think part of it may have been his use of words too. I didn’t really care for the term “monkey mind”, I felt that it was very redundant and became very distracting to me throughout the book. I also felt that he was self-indulgent throughout almost the entire book. Also, I felt like he put his daughter and wife on the back burner in his endless pursuit of liberation. I had made a note of this upon my reading the book. I then scribbled it out thinking that it may have not been important in the paper, but the book later pointed out that he realized his neglect of his daughter and wife in his pursuit to the answers of American Buddhism. I’m sure that Dinty Moore would assert that it was not selfish however, since we are all one and the same and there is no definite separation of individual except in the mind. I think overall it was a good book though; he made a lot of good points that seem very relevant in my life at the current time which I though was very interesting. He points out that instead of focusing all time and attention on retiring, and getting that certain job, or certain promotion; one needs to focus on then here and now, the little things of life. This really applies to the fact that I get so caught up in my work schedule at Chili’s and feel like if my boss changes my schedule it is a reflection of my performance and is enough to make me not even want to get out of bed. Reading this book actually helped me see things as minutiae, minor details, and I actually laughed about my work situation. I get so caught up in grades and work that life will pass me by if I’m not careful. The fact is the manager was giving me a break because I work six days a week and he knows how much I put into my academics as well; it…

One reason why kids should get a weekly allowance for doing chores is that it teaches kids the responsibility to work for things. The older they get the more and more kids start thanking their parents for the things they do. Now imagine all the good times people have had while with their parents. Would they be the same if they knew their parents were getting paid to do this for them? Some believe that if the children knew the things their parents do for them are because they are getting paid, they wouldn’t have as strong of a bond. Many people that didn’t have much money or wealth growing up always revert back to one thing, family. As Milad Doroudian, a writer, columnist and historian, and senior editor of The Art of Polemics magazine says in simplest form, “What is the true value of housework? The prospect of seeing your children grow up, healthy and…
