Chris Mccandless Live In The Wild Analysis

I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person and he was seeking happiness for himself in the wild. There are many things that show that he wasn’t crazy, like getting along with people, having some knowledge of living in the wild, and he was very bright and made some good decisions. However, he did seem somewhat incompetent. The first thing about Chris is that he was very bright. Even people noticed how smart he was, like when Franz said, “ He seemed very intelligent.” This shows that Ron sees how smart Chris is. It also explains to us that Chris knows what he is doing and that he wants to do it. Another thing about Chris is that he made food decisions. For instance, he learned off of the people who he met like when he learned how to smoke meat. This shows that he is preparing for his adventure in Alaska. Therefore demonstrating how he made good decisions. Another good decision that he made was buying the plant book. This shows that he isn’t crazy because he is preparing for his time in Alaska. Clearly Chris was a smart man who made some good choices on his journey.
One thing he knew how to do was how to hunt. A quote that shows this is, “The diary entries following his return to the bus catalogs a bounty of wild meat… The biggest prize of all MOOSE.” This shows how he was a good hunter. It is also an example of ethos because when he killed the moose, therefore showing that he is a good hunter and adds to his credibility of being a hunter. Although he was a good hunter, he did lack some skills that are necessary to survive. The quote, “Maggots already! Smoking seems ineffective. Looks like disaster.” Shows how he couldn’t preserve the moose meat. This is also an example of pathos because he was sad and felt like he shouldn’t have killed the moose.
