When people leave their families and friends behind to run away from home, there is most of the time a specific reason to do so. Weather they return to their loved ones depends on their personal situations or their reasons for leaving. For many like Chris McCandless, what they think is going to be good for them leads to their despair. This quote is important because it shows that chris realized that he can't be alone in the woods like he wanted, and he can't keep pushing people away like he did. This evidence connects to the real world because people think that they have to surround themselves with people to feel happy, in Chris’s case he thought the opposite and in the end regretted…

Using disability to represent himself, the parable of the mountain describes social class and structure as being a daunting mountain. Those at the top scream down to find a way up but it is almost impossible. Although individuals may begin the journey to the submit it quickly gets lonely. The individual has the option to continue climbing or return to their group. Even then that doesn’t account for hazards and changes in the path to the metaphorical summit. This metaphor sets up the remainder of the book brilliantly. Exile and Pride, following the mountain metaphor, is divided into two primary sections; home and bodies.…

Entry ‘into the world’ involves perseverance and motivation in order to adapt to new condition in which an individual may achieve opportunities for growth and development. In the novel, ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’, the seventeen year-old protagonist, Tom Brennan, confronts a traumatic catastrophe, which compels him to undergo physical relocation and tumultuous emotional change. The predominant transition, Tom faces moving into Coghill whereby he has to deal with social alienation and the agonies of trauma, hindering his growth and development. It is evident that Tom experiences flashbacks of the tragic car accident of his brother in the quote, “Running towards the car. Running into headlights. Running into the silence of death.” The anaphora of ‘running’ highlights his emotional devastation, which emphasizes Tom’s paranoia in the initial stages of the novel. The technique of using flashbacks allows the reader to empathize with Tom and stimulate the reader’s curiosity. As a result of this crisis, Tom responds adversely to transferring to a new paradigm of Coghill.…

Chris McCandless finally opened eyes to see what he had in front of him because he realized that his family did care for him and that the people he met along the way gave him happiness, but was too much of a fool to realize. The three texts implicitly demonstrate the inevitable reality that individuals must leave behind short term comforts and the safety provided by the old world in order to satisfy unmet inner desires. Burke cleverly depicts this concept through the symbolic gesture of the Brennans “Closing the front door of their home for the last time.” Through the use of precise timing, “4.30 am on Friday the 23rd of January,” coupled with the first person narrative allows a reflective and melancholic tone to be established, reinforcing this concept of sacrifice of the status quo. The fact that Tom was forcibly removed from his old world (Mumbilli) hints that he has left behind his family and friends in order to seek a portal to a new world (Coghill). Thus the notion of sacrifice can challenge the experiences of moving into the world and change an individual’s attitudes and beliefs.…

“So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation…” (Krakauer 56). Throughout Jon Krakauer’s book, Into the Wild, Chris McCandless sees this as a truth so many are unwilling to face. However he refuses to be one of those people who are, “conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation” (Krakauer 57) regardless of his own highly comfortable upbringing. Throughout the book, Krakauer develops his thesis that Chris is not just another Bear Grylls wanna-be. In this respect the author is correct. He isn’t just someone who read a book or article and decided to run to the Alaska wilderness. “He wasn’t incompetent—he wouldn’t have lasted 113 days if he were.”(Krakauer 85).…
