The quote from Thoreau relates to Chris because even though his father was a brilliant and loving man, he had lied to Chris his whole life, which forced Chris to feel much hatred for his father that never resolved. “Chris’s smoldering anger, it turns out, was fueled by a discovery he’d made two summers earlier.” (Krakauer…

Chris was always fearless. On page 109, it talks about how Chris’ father, Walt, took Chris on a three day hike, when he was eight, in the Shenandoah to climb Old Rag. Then Walt talks about how himself, his wife, kids from the other marriage, and Chris went to climb Long Peaks in Colorado. At 13,000 feet, Walt wanted to turn around and go back but Chris wanted to keep going. He would’ve risked the dangerous path. Even later on, when he left to Alaska, he would take risks and do dangerous things. Walt had said, “He didn’t think the odds applied to him.” He had no fears, and he did what he wanted.…

Before Chris left for Alaska he visited his parents’ home town, also the town he spent his early childhood in. Chris visited old family friends and discovered his father had a wife and two kids when he met Billie, Chris’s mother. Walt had two families at one time and eventually abandoned his first family and married Billie. “Long after falling in love with Billie, long after she gave birth to Chris, Walt continued his relationship with Marcia in secret, dividing his time between two households, and two families”(121). Chris hated the fact that he was a second family, a bastard kid. This information made Chris feel like a bad…

Also many people argued that McCandless was suffering from a mental illness probably like depression, however, there has been no evidence given that Chris was actually suffering from this. A third thing is that there is no doubt that Chris McCandless did not have a bound with his parents, he did not spend a lot of time with them, but have people considered the fact that Chris did not want to become like his parents, the type that have to work all the time and the type that do not have time to do anything else but…

Throughout some parts of the book, Chris handled things poorly. He was stubborn, ungrateful and stupid. An example of this is how he acted during the situation with his parents when Krakauer reveals Mr. McCandless’s secret love affair. Despite the fact that his…

Appears to be the first sign that Chris is unaffected by the words of others whether by ignoring them, getting lost in his fantasies, or the least likely- being mentally handicapped (bipolar?), delusional? It is also said a few lines down that “[Chris] simply appeared to be absent.” which also aids the fact that Chris is doing something in his mind to avoid the words. Could almost foreshadow how Chris doesn’t deal with reality, how he just lives in his fantasies instead of facing facts. Interesting to note the “old rage of helplessness” possibly referring to a feeling she is very used the feeling; it could be that she herself has been faced with this situation. The words used in the passage suggest great strength of character from Chris. Grandfather Connor was talking to Chris but Chris seems unfazed by it and even…

Chris made people feel so comfortable around him that whenever he was traveling and needed a place to stay it was almost guaranteed that someone would offer him a place to stay. He had a very magnetic personality, from what the book describes. People were pulled by his charming personality ever since he was young “as an eight-year-old, he grew vegetables behind the house in Annadale and then sold them door-to-door around the neighborhood…. ‘by the time he came home, the wagon would be empty, and he’d have a bunch of money in his hand.’” (116)* On his journeys Chris met countless people and all of those people were touched by Chris in one way or another. Each person he met became apart of his surrogate family. Jan Burres and her husband spoke so fondly of McCandless and were very keen on hearing from him. Another person that McCandless touched was Ronald Franz, an elderly man who lost his family in an accident. He fell so in love with McCandless that he even offered to “adopt him, if [Chris] would be [his] grandson.” (55)* Anyone that came into contact with Chris could see his blatant…

Chris McCandless’s move to reject society is recognized as an admirable decision because it displayed his bravery to defy his parents and free himself from the physical and mental abuse. The story, The Wild Truth, gives the readers more of an insight of Chris’s past because it was written by his sister, Carine McCandless. The McCandless’s had a very rough family history. Walt McCandless was seeing two women at the same time and raised two families at once. As Chris’s senior year of high school was ending, he was determined to take off in his beloved Datsun immediately after graduation. He did not know where he wanted to go or how long he would be, and that angered his father. The two men got into an argument, Walt claiming that Chris was being “completely irresponsible”(McCandless, Carine). However, Chris challenged that statement by reiterating the fact…

It’s easy to believe Chris suffers from a mental illness such as high functioning borderline personality disorder. This misconception comes from the fact that Chris creates a new version of himself, Alexander Supertramp, fails to maintain relationships he creates throughout his journey, and is meticulous with how the trail to his past life is left. These traits seem to be enough to diagnose Chris with such a disorder, that is if you take it out of context. Chris creates a new version of himself to symbolize the new life he is soon to pursue. He wants to limit the connections to his old life in all ways possible. A life that he regards with disdain, because it failed to meet his moral code. A code highly represented by a passage Chris highlighted in one of his books, “Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth” (Thoreau qtd. in Krakauer 117). Chris’ family failed to understand, and respect these ideals, resulting in Chris’ cutting them out of his life. His parents insisted on trying to increase his quality life with material values while also keeping their previous affair a secret from Chris. He fails to maintain his relationships with people not because he’s antisocial, but because he resents society, and doesn’t…
