In chapter one, we learn what it means to “sit at the feet of Rabbi Jesus.” It not only means that we are literally sitting at his feet, but it is also an idiom for learning from your rabbi. The disciples did this to be covered in the dust of their rabbi. Ann and Lois give an example through the story of Mary and Martha. They too wanted to be covered in Jesus’ dust. Mary literally sat at his feet and listened to Jesus; while Martha was too busy being distracted by other things. This helps us retune our thinking and imagine being a disciple at Jesus’ feet. In chapter two, we learn how extremely devoted the Jewish are through their religion and daily customs. The Rabbi had the most customs to uphold and their life style and goals were different from most. Jesus’ greatest goal was to raise up disciples who would carry on his teaching after he was gone. He spends his entire time on earth being a living example of God to all of his disciples.…

When one views the life of the Apostle Paul in the New Testament it is evident that he had a heart to disciple others. The evidence at hand identified Paul as more than an individual who had doctrinal knowledge, for he was the quintessential model for living out the standards of Christian behavior. In his letter to the Church of Philippi Paul encourage them to “Whatever…

One of the most important aspects that the authors focus upon is the explicit biblical citing of small group ministry within the life of Jesus, specifically found in chapter 2, the writers point out that, “Those who would be a disciple of Jesus must practice the disciplines of Jesus.” It is here that the authors express clear vivid examples from the Gospels whereby Jesus takes a small band of disciples to mentor, instruct, serve as example, and to the unleash them to ministry (cf., Matthew…

Ephesians 2:1 state, “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.” This scripture teaches us that we are spiritually dead and lost. In the article, Innovate Church, it explains, “The starting point for becoming a disciple of Jesus is to examine the Scriptures and see what the characteristics of a first century disciple looked like and then to draw from those passages bedrock principles regarding being a disciple.”1 As Christian leaders, we should strive to learn the scripture…

Part One of Elmer Towns’ Concise Bible Doctrines introduces Christian theology by outlining the key pieces of the doctrine to help the reader understand Christianity and faith. Towns begins by saying that the main purpose of Bible doctrine is to communicate the gospel to the people at a point of need. Every man has the same need because every man is cut off from God. Man is born with a sin nature, and because he is less than holy, he is isolated and alienated from God. Death is imminent for everyone, but God communicates through the Bible that through Jesus Christ, man can be saved. The word “gospel” means “good news.” It is the responsibility of every Christian to reach out in relationships to the unsaved in sharing this news, and to other Christians in fellowship. Christians are called to seek God, and study the Bible to learn to know Him better, and worship Him always. Proper worship of God requires faith; the source of which is the Bible. Doctrinal faith is the beginning and the test of Christianity. If our statement of faith is wrong, than our faith is misplaced. Our faith must be grounded on correct knowledge of God. However, intellectual knowledge of God is not enough. Emotional expression and volition are equally important. The Holy Spirit acts on behalf of Jesus Christ to plant faith in a Christian’s heart. He indwells us, and helps us exercise our faith daily. We can grow in our faith by studying God’s word, seeking the Lord, confessing sin, actively following biblical principles, and constantly communicating with God. Faith is ultimately a reliance and trust of God, and the Bible teaches us to rely on Him for everything.…

The purpose of Christ isin Romans 8:1-3, it is that through Jesus Christ one is no longer under condemnation, one is justified through Him!How does this come to be in a person’s life, by faith? Romans 5:1 tells the believer that they are justified by faith, not only justified but now have peace with God. This is confirmed for those that live by faith in this good news in Romans 10:4. Once again Paul leads us into a deeper understanding of our lives with Christ, now that we are justified, we also have been sanctified.Paul tells us in Romans Chapter 15:16 that it is the Holy Ghost which sanctifies, that is, we have been set apart for something greater than pleasing ourselves found in Romans 8:12-13 and the ultimate setting apart in Romans 12:1-2. Now that one has been born again, how shall that person live? According to the Spirit, not pleasing the flesh or submitting to it. God has provided the possibility for a believer to live graciously through the power of the Holy Spirit, and one can find the ethics for living this life in Chapters 12-14.…

One of the greatest privileges of the Christian life is to go and proclaim the gospel to every nation, tribe, and tongue (Rev. 7:9). It is the task and duty of every believer to share Christ. When Jesus gave the Great Commission to the disciples, He said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” (Matt. 28:19). The task of sharing the gospel can be done in one’s own community, workplace, or with family. However, in order to fulfill the Great Commission, Christians must go to every nation, tribe, and tongue to fulfill the task of reaching the world for Christ.…

Peter teaches us, followers of Christ, key things to truly follow Christ. In 1 Peter, he stresses that Christians are to be God 's obedient children, "chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, God 's own people" (1:14). Us as Christians are striving to be a “human-like” Jesus if you will. We are God’s people on Earth doing his work for the work of Him. One example of a true believer is that you have encountered the true and living God and that you have undergone a change in your heart and soul. Another is realizing that the sacrifice of Christ alone for the forgiveness of his sins, then the Holy Spirit has come and lives in that person. The last example of being a true believer is that you are changed on the inside, not controlled from the outside. It means that your heart has been changed by the presence of God. These are just a couple of definitions that define a true follower. In the CCC 916 it states: “…to give themselves to God who is loved above all and, pursuing the perfection of charity in the service of the Kingdom, to signify and proclaim in the Church the glory of the world to come.” This paragraph supports Peter’s teachings about being a true follower of Christ.…

As Christians, we are called to be a light for Christ. We are the image of God walking this earth. We need to know the Bible and what it stands for so that we may defend it thoroughly. We need to be able to share our personal story with others as a testament of Gods goodness and how we came to know and love him. 1 peter 3:15 states, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” We all need to know why we believe in Christ and be able to share the message of his love with a broken world. We need to be the hands and feet of Christ and carry his love through or actions and words wherever we go. We will be without reproach when we live as true followers of Christ. People will no longer call us crazy or fake when we begin to truly reflect…

The Jesus Creed has really helped me to look at Scripture from what I believe is a more biblical and Jesus centered perspective. While I have read the words Jesus used from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and Leviticus 19:18 many times in Scripture, I never considered how all His teachings might have stemmed from them. I did not know Jesus had amended the Shema of Judaism because I didn’t know there was a Shema before reading this book, but now knowing this I can more clearly see what Jesus was doing. He was correcting a misunderstanding how some used and understood the Torah. Most paid excellent attention to the letter of the Law; however they had failed to grasp the message that God had called them to partake in His redemptive mission. Just as the Israelites got tangled up with the letter of the Law and missed their calling, are we as the Church today also failing to answer the same call? I believe it’s far too easy to make a case that we are, especially in America. Jesus redefines what it means to love God, instead of showing love to God by observing the Torah, Jesus calls people to follow Him, and in doing so He equates loving God to having a personal relationship with Himself thereby amending the Shema, making it personal. Next, He adds to the Shema by using a Leviticus passage saying “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love of God and love of others is the core of Jesus’ Shema and loving God means following Jesus. McKnight believes the Jesus Creed is the foundation of everything Jesus teaches about spiritual formation and after having read his book I have to say I agree. Everything Jesus does is out of love for God and for others as illustrated time and time again throughout the Gospels.…

Christ is the central person in Christian discipleship. Without Christ, Christianity would not exist and there would be no followers of Christ. To be true followers of Christ, believers must be willing to learn of the ways and teachings of Christ. Christ is central to Christian discipleship because He is the teacher of His disciples. Through the Holy Spirit and Word of God, Jesus Christ calls His disciples to Him and then teaches them how to become like Him. Jesus gives free salvation to believers and followers of Him. However, there is a cost of following Jesus. To be a disciple of Jesus Christ, a person must be obedient and follow the commandments of God. Being obedient to Christ demands followers of Christ to put Christ before their personal relationships, careers, friends, children, and material belongings and to take up their own cross on a daily basis. Disciples of Christ must put Jesus before their own fleshly desires. Nevertheless, followers of Christ can be assured that Jesus will lead them as they follow His teachings and obey His commandments while acting like Jesus and living as he lived (Rogers, Adrian, 2005).…
