In one scene ‘Jimmy’s been naughty’ I felt that their use of focused white lighting helped express the pain and suffering of the…
When I first saw the play I payed no attention to the costumes but enjoy the overall play, which mean that costume designers did a good job. According to professor Landis, she says that costumes should not be the main focus but improve the overall environment of the play. Once I look back to picture of the play, I start noticing costumes. I find it beautiful how all the characters wore emerald, lively clothing to add to the wonder of Emerald City. I also notice that Elphaba has the famous wiked witch hat but the costume designer made modification that make it appear like the orignial hat, but it looks more suiting to a beautiful younge women. This production used a lot of change of set design as well as the use of expensive effects. For instant, during the scene were there is flying monkeys, the audience not only see a million monkeys appearing as if they are going to take flight but the huge dragon on top of the stage comes alive. During this scene the light technicitan uses red lights on the stage and the background is Elsabub castle. The use of red lights, loud sounds, and the…
How are the actors going to manage the setting/scenery such as the moonlight and the wall?…
Burton uses lighting to change the audiences’ feelings about the scene they are viewing. He creates and depicts multiple feelings throughout different scenes. For example, In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, when the winners of the Golden Tickets are lined up outside, a mixture of high key lighting and low key lighting are used to give the scene its natural burton feeling of cheerfulness and uncertainty. In the beginning of the movie, the town was depicted as a post-depression town with people struggling to support their families. Low key lighting was used to make the scene depressed and gloomy. When the characters entered the…
Kathy Dobie’s memoir was thought-provoking. When Kathy first had sex with Brian I knew that this was the start of some bad decisions. When she later went from Brian to Victor I knew she was trying to be a “saint.” When Kathy later found her “tribe” I knew from the start they would use her. When they raped her, she found herself analyzing all of her decisions. It gave her confirmation to change the way she was behaving but to keep her “saint” presence in life.…
audience that The Heights is not the most high end town. The set was perfect for the story line.…
For the men, suits and top hats were worn. Makeup for both actors and actresses was done to be very dramatic and dark, emphasizing the lips and eyes. From the playwright and director position, the costume choice and makeup provided a key component to the play, drawing the attention of the audience and focusing in on the outward…
The set was well made and fit the time period quite nicely, but I could not help but feel it could have used a few more props to give the audience a better sense of immersion. It was often hard to tell where the scene was, or if the characters had changed scenes or not. Using more props would also give more distinction between events and places, making the overall scenes more memorable. One of the strongest points in the play was the costumes. They all were extraordinarily well made, and looked authentic. Some of the notable mentions are Prince Pedro’s uniform, the watchmen’s uniforms, and all the costumes in the ball scene. The costumes helped the audience remember which characters are which, and make the play more memorable.…
From the warm yellow light for a Christmas party on Christmas Eve, to the hue light with snow falling, the lighting and special effect played an important role in completing the world suggested by the ballet. And I must say that the part where lighting and special effects did it best job was the performance of the Prince, Clara and many other dancers when they get to the Land of Sweets, when the snow is falling, creating a wonderful and magical images. This was the only time that they used special effects with a white theme - white dresses, white snow, white and hue lights. What a nice ending to Act I!…
Cameron states “that the play is as much about what is unseen as that which is seen.” The use of a solitary spotlight on an actor on an otherwise dark stage draws our eyes to the character and the story they tell within that light, but it also makes us wonder about the darkness, what do we imagine is lurky in that darkness? “The Ruby mannequin stands under the street lamp with the moon hovering”, the moon symbolises the ominous indicator of night along with the street only being lit dimly by streetlamps and the Ruby mannequin which is essentially used in desperate hope of extracting information from their neighbours. Sounds of “distant thunder rumbling and rain falling, a soundscape of whistling wind, the echoing of wind chimes and a creaky tree, together with the darkness and thoughts of a taken child, create a sinister atmosphere, of extreme suffering and deepens that sense of unease and fear amongst the audience. This play is a gothic fairytale, like all…
It helped to set the mood several times. The performance utilized each of the four controllable qualities: intensity, distribution, color, and movement. The intensity of light on one character over others allowed the audience to focus their attention on that character only. The distribution of lighting was well used, there were lights all around the theater that alternated in use to provide different effects and distribute light evenly. The color of lighting created dramatic shifts in the mood despite nothing in the scenery changing at all. Red was used to symbolize dramatic events, such as when Adela had sexual intercourse with Pepe. Blue was used to symbolize sadness, such as when Bernarda’s husband died or when Maria Josefa, Bernarda’s senile mother, is locked up in here room. Lastly, they used movement when they made the spotlight follow a moving character across to stage. This also helped the audience to focus our attention and get that character’s ideas…
Cinderella is an American fantasy film that was released in spring of 2015 and directed by Kenneth Branagh. The film was set in the 18th century era in Europe. The story was based on the journey of Ella (Lily James) and how each person that she met throughout the film made an influence on her life. As I watched the film, I noticed how the costumes of the main characters displayed their presence in the film and how they connect with Ella. The costumes are both realistic and stylized in some way, according to each character. Additionally, each of them has their own color palette to distinguish the personalities and their character’s role in the film.…
When the lights came on, at the beginning of the play, there was a lot to take in. It was a box set with yellow peeling walls showing patches of brick, covered in dirt and age. Around the bottom and top of the set was a colorful chunky border with orange, purple, and greens. This seemed out of place to me. I couldn’t figure out why the director would want there to be a colorful, bright border if the rest of the walls were dirty and had a grey tint. Three mattresses lay against the walls with a few thin blankets and one pillow and a chair was thrown into the corner of their room. Also, each character had it’s water bottle. That seemed normal enough to me but I was confused as to why two bottles had no wrapper and one of the bottles had a Dasani wrapper.…
While watching the movie, you can’t help but notice all of the spectacular sets. Each of the sets matches the time period perfectly and the details that are put into the sets is beyond amazing. The Phantoms underground lair is a great example of an exquisitely detailed set. The lights and the sets work together hand in hand to create an atmosphere of mystery and sadness. The lights depict the pre electric era when stage lighting was done with gas light. It provided a warm-looking environment. An example of this lighting would also be the Phantoms lair. While he uses an abundance of candles, those candles still create shadows in which he hides his deformity.…
The successful aspects of the movie included the set and the costumes. Visually arresting, the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg are rendered as elaborate stage sets. The intricate costumes used gave the film an elegant and prominent feel. The music used throughout the movie went well with the scenes. As tension heightened the music became dramatic and intense. In romantic and heartfelt scenes, the music became fresh and energetic.…
