Hey Virginia, there is more than just a Santa Claus. Nowadays, Americans have either forgotten or ignored Christmas traditions put in place over 1500 years ago. They would rather indulge in the gifts and shopping to please their family than sit back and enjoy the holiday. This new mindset has led Christmas, Hanukkah, and other seasonal festivals to lose their religious intent through the past centuries by the hands of both people and markets. The original purpose of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, has been trampled and overshadowed by a marketeer’s interpretation of how to represent the holiday. Santa and snowmen have become the faces of Christmas, instead of the Son…

Colonial Christmas was a holiday for adults, not a magical day for children. Christmas celebrations originated in the southern colonies, and activities included parties, hunts, feasts, and church services, all of which were adult activities. We do get some of our traditions from colonial days. For instance, the main decorations were holly, laurel, and garland, because these were the only plants that looked good during the middle of winter. Mistletoe was hung prominently, and couples would find their way under it at the Christmas balls.…

Christmas in America has had different meanings to many people through history. Farmers, workers, and religious adherents practiced their traditions in the public sphere in respective periods of time. However, the modern understanding of Christmas celebration stems from the experience of a growing middle class as it set out to define its identity. Christmas as a domestic, commercial holiday originates from the middle class engagement with the vehicles of the first industrial revolution and the subsequent adoption of a culture of consumerism. Rural farmers traditionally celebrated the end of the harvest and the beginning of the long winter with feasting and celebration at Christmas during the eighteenth century.…

The best way to approach the “war on Christmas” would be to have respect and tolerance for other people’s traditions. A large majority of U.S. residents are Christian, so obviously there is a prominent representation of their traditions in the United States. This is fine, and people need to realize that this is to be expected. However, Christians also should not think this makes them superior, and they too need to be equally tolerant and respectful of others. Cathy Young shares the same view, stating, “Those Americans who don’t celebrate Christmas obviously have to be tolerant of the vast majority who do; but they also have a right ro a public square which does not loudly tell them they don’t belong” (Young 417). Religious expression should be acceptable as long it isn’t being disrespectful toward others and isn’t being used to impose their beliefs on others. Therefore the display of religious Christmas decorations should be ethically accepted because it is doing no harm and is often only a form of private religious expression in order to show devotion to one’s religious…

Just as Christmas itself was not officially recognized and sanctioned in the United States until the mid to late nineteenth century, Christmas gift-giving did not become common until the same period (Miller, 90). Between 1820 and 1870 advertising in Philadelphia and New York newspapers for Christmas gifts was uncommon, with New Year 's gifts or ‘holiday gifts ' being more commonly mentioned (Miller, 91). Yet by about 1870 Christmas gifts started to be promoted more heavily. American businesses display their toys, clothes, specials, jewelry, etc. through a variety of repetitive television commercials, newspaper ads, circulars, and magazine advertisements in an attempt to bring in the most customers. The Christmas "shopping season" starts the day after Thanksgiving and lasts right up to New Years Day, with the day after Christmas specials. Each year it seems that department stores start to display their holiday features earlier and earlier, as they attempt to remind shoppers that the upcoming holiday season is approaching.…

Some examples of Pagan traditions among the Christmas holiday are mistletoe, the tree, gift giving, Santa, stockings, and the actual Christmas Day itself. Almost anything that comes to mind when thinking about Christmas is non-Christian. Many people say, "Happy birthday Jesus!" on the 25th but little do they know nothing in the bible suggests that he was born that day. Many other traditions such as mistletoe and stockings are Roman and Greek.…
