Christmas Tradition
Christmas Tradition All over the world people have their own traditions and customs. Some traditions and customs have been passed on to generation to generation, others are beginning to build their own whether they choose a holiday, a summer vacation, or a special event to celebrate each year. My family tradition did not come from generations past; however, ours began when my parents started their own family as husband and wife. My parents did not have any traditions in there generation. My mom and dad were always there for me we did everything together as a family; for instance, spending holidays together, vacations, birthdays, and Sunday night dinners. My parents have taught me the true meaning of family. I have built everlasting memories so that I can carry on my family’s tradition. Years later, I want to pull out that file of memories, think of my parents and smile. Thus when I think of Christmas time, what comes to my mind is a sense of togetherness, happiness, and laughter. Our family begins with getting a tree, decorating, baking cookies, opening our gifts we got from Santa Claus, and then finally have Christmas dinner. This marks the beginning of my family’s Christmas tradition. My family was not a big family, yet there were six of us: my mom and dad, my two sisters Danielle and Jennifer, my brother Christopher and me. We were living in Louisiana; it was my favorite out of all the other states we had lived in. It was in the country where all we saw were bamboo sticks which, were actually sugar cane fields; instead, I thought we lived next to a field of giant Pixie-Sticks. I ask my mom if we can get some of the giant canes for the Christmas tree. Of course my mom does not want to tell me they are too big for the tree; instead, she tells me to wait until we select a Christmas tree. The Christmas tree is a big part of my family’s tradition. Every year my Dad took my siblings and me to get the

All can relate to that one special time of the year, Christmas, when whole families unite and spend hours endlessly sharing stories, making memories, and of course, opening presents! What happens though, when all of the sentimental value of Christmas is replaced solely with physical value, the gifts? What would Christmas be like then? Richard Rodriguez takes the readers through one of his annual Christmases and brings to light, through his thoughts, the disconnect that exists between himself, his siblings, and his parents. Rodriguez’ chronological presentation of events with flashbacks, short, abrupt syntax, light-hearted attention to detail and concerned tone contribute to suggest his worried attitude toward his family.…

Winston Churchill once said, “Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” As the big day draws near, it is important to reflect on the roots of the global holiday as well as the direction in which it is heading. Christmas is a tradition rooted deep in the history of western society. It has undergone many changes since it’s earliest celebrations. Even today, the holiday is constantly changing. Each year brings new innovations to Christmas. In the dawn of the holiday, it was minor and focused on the birth of Jesus, the light of the world. In the 19th century, Christmas was a time of family and goodwill to mankind. Today, though there still remains aspects of religion and selflessness, more than ever it has become a holiday consumed by commercialism. It is a development that is not likely to go way any time soon.…

Family traditions are a mixture of people’s attitudes, ideas, and cultures in which a person learns values. Family traditions do help people build characteristics that involve their self and others around them. A person’s family can help make the final result of who or how an individual person turns out, but only if that person chooses to follow these traditions and keep them alive. People are different in many ways but they are also alike in many ways. Families are one of the ways people are alike and the social upbringing one may have had. The traditions in a family are one of the ways people are different. Family traditions are a social and personal identity that everyone develops that belong to a family or a group. The family and all that is inherited helps people become who they are as adults. Also, as individual people they do not have to follow what they were taught while growing up. Some people are considered the black sheep in their family. This is because they do not act and/or believe in the same manor that their family taught them. They go against the cultural norm and do not act or believe the same way they were taught when growing up. People are given values and goals to help them be guided in life, but some do not follow guidance and do or believe the way they feel is in their best…

Jesus our King is our reason for Christmas, but merchants and television have torn us away from this idea. To keep Christ in Christmas things must be done, for instance quickly scrawling Merry X-mas on a card is totally against the idea, although more convenient then writing Christmas it suggests that Christmas is not a Christen holiday. Christmas is a time for presents and T.V. specials to little kids, it could be taught to them that it's not what you get, but what you give in the first place. I no for a fact that Jesus died to save us, and not get praise from God, or to get us to follow Him, He received crucifixion willingly to save all races, in all nations, and for all ages. So giving secretly to the poor, the sick, or people you try to tolerate your being like Him, by giving to all no matter what. When decorating outside on your lawn don't just put Frost and Santa and the reindeer, add a Nativity Scene to remind you and all that pass your house that you know what Christmas is truly about. And inside your house all Christmassy as is may be remember on your tree at the top that, angel or star you place so delicately think of why you use those images. Maybe that symbolizes the one that lit the way to Bethlehem where in the manger Christ slept, or that angel signifies the one Mary saw who told her she was to give the birth to Child King, or the one who told the Shepard's and kings about Jesus being born in Bethlehem. When in school remember to keep in your hearts forever what you learn in religion class about Advent and Christmas so you can others like some protestant neighbors and maybe in the light of season they'll come back to our church. When you give gifts remember the look on the recipients faces because that is the best Christmas of…

We are surrounded by tradition in our lives, whether we take the time to notice it or not. Christmas is a religious tradition, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in elementary schools is a centripetal national tradition, and visiting a particular place every year may be a family’s tradition. No matter what we do, or where we go, there will almost always be some form of tradition around. So, why should we get rid of any type of tradition? Tradition can be proved to be evidently essential today based on remembering important dates and events, culture lasting through generations, and bringing families closer together.…

While sitting table after gorging on the offerings of Thanksgiving, it was time to fulfill a family tradition reminiscent of my mother’s 90’s new-age phase, we all take a moment to awkwardly attempt to put to all we are thankful for into a thirty-second monolog. When the warmth of the spotlight focused on me, I let the estrogen flow, disregard the patience of the less sensitive family seated at the table, and started in on this long-winded exposé on how each of the women before me gives me all that I’m thankful for. It was upon the conclusion of my verbose explanation on all my mother does for me, that she took this opportunity to tell of how she shares with every mother she encounters the story of, if it wasn’t for her, I might not be sitting with us today.…

During my fifth year in elementary school, my family and I took a trip to Vietnam for the holidays. It was fascinating to experience the culture my parents were born and raised in firsthand, and even more astonishing to realize just how different the Vietnamese culture was compared to the American culture. Christmas is a prime example of how these two cultures are very dissimilar: not only decoration-wise, but also in the belief of a certain jolly old man, and the way families in each culture spend Christmas Eve and Christmas…

I recall clearly the day I received the news my grandfather had passed away. My parents sat my brother and I down in the living room, and when I heard I remember staring blankly at the Christmas tree in the corner, at a loss for words. The flashing lights on the tree blurred as tears filled my eyes. I was only twelve, and the realization that I would never see my papa again was equally confusing, as it was heartbreaking. He had battled with lung cancer for months, and it was so disappointing how it all ended. My whole family spent many late nights at the hospital, and we all had hoped that he would have more time left. It was a hurtful loss, and he is still greatly missed, five years later. Looking back, however, I can now grasp how much the…

In every conceivable manner, a family is liked to our past, and a bridge to our future. We all live in a family setting that can consist of one or many of our relatives. Growing up I lived with my mother, father, and my two younger brothers. I was born in Wurzburg, Germany due to the fact that my father was in the Army but I grew up in rural Portland, North Dakota. The nice thing for me growing up was the fact that both sets of my grandparents and my aunts and uncles also lived there. I believe our family traditions and the cultural legacies came from my ancestors, grandparents, and my other relatives. Our family traditions and our cultural beliefs contribute to our family values in which we follow today. I believe we take the parts of the past that meant the most to us and we also combined it with the new traditions we follow today that were created by our family. As a family style we make a house a home with love to share with all that live there.…

Sadly, we do not have the luxury of visiting our relatives every year but, we have gone twice during Christmas and New Year, and Christmas was celebrated quite differently. During these trips I learned a lot about my heritage and the importance of tradition. You don’t hear the words Santa Claus, and children don’t receive presents on Christmas Day. Instead, we celebrate Dia de los Reyes, or Three Kings’ Day which is celebrated on January 6th .This special holiday commemorates the three wise men who traveled a distance to bring gifts for the infant baby Jesus. Aside from this holiday, we also participated in las posadas, it is a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s arrival in Bethlehem, performed just before Christmas. Young adults perform these reenactments as they ride on donkey in the rancho, searching for hospitality. Once they are turned away three times, the entire community gathers together at the local church for warm bowls of pozole and mugs of chocolate (Mexican hot chocolate). This reenactment is crucial to our tradition as it is performed several times leading up to Christmas. During my stay in Mexico and participating in all these holidays I learned that there is much more to life than receiving the most gifts during the holidays. My stay there taught me to be humble and to value the important…
