“A Native American Thanksgiving”, written by Beverly Cox and Clara Sue Kidwell, is an informational article including recipes, all relating to Native American culture. They begin this piece by dating back to the earliest known facts of “Thanksgiving” between the Pilgrims and the Indians. Cox and Kidwell set out to show the reader the real meaning behind this holiday. Pointing out that Americans only give thanks once a year, they go in depth about the Native American’s beliefs of giving appreciations. Indians would give credit and acknowledgment to the spirits of nature throughout the year in hopes for generosity in upcoming hunting and planting seasons, considering farming was an important part of Indian life. This material allows Cox and Kidwell…

“Our Christmas tree was never even an inch under eight feet, and it took the whole family hours to decorate it. Each year one of us was honored by being allowed to place the angel at the top of the tree, while Father help us up in his strong arms.” (Pelzer 22). This passage is a simile because this is how we are in Christmas, our tree would be long and it takes us a whole hour to decorate it. We are allowed to place the star on top of the tree, and that is what’s amazing about it. This brought my attention and interested me because it showed how good the mother was to her children and hoe kind she treated them, because the name of the chapter called Good Times. It also shows that the kid remember how good she was and then how she turned…

Dickens purposefully describes the setting in the book with adjectives that could be applied to the reality of Victorian England at the time. The industrial revolution was in full swing and the over populated conditions were forcing people to sleep on the streets and work 12 hour days to make ends meet. In the first stave, Dickens introduces us to the character Ebenezer Scrooge who embodies all of these reasons for the failings of Christmas. The narrator desribes him as 'hard and sharp as flint' -harsh words that sound awfully similar to the way Dickens describes the conditions of the English Streets- 'cold, bleak and biting'. Dickens clearly outlines using this language that is is aware of the problems and conditions of their struggling society. He then goes on to point out that good fortune can come in the form of love and family and embodies this ideal in his model lower-middle class family, the Cratchits. "They were not a handsome family...But they were happy, grateful, pleased with…

Hey Virginia, there is more than just a Santa Claus. Nowadays, Americans have either forgotten or ignored Christmas traditions put in place over 1500 years ago. They would rather indulge in the gifts and shopping to please their family than sit back and enjoy the holiday. This new mindset has led Christmas, Hanukkah, and other seasonal festivals to lose their religious intent through the past centuries by the hands of both people and markets. The original purpose of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, has been trampled and overshadowed by a marketeer’s interpretation of how to represent the holiday. Santa and snowmen have become the faces of Christmas, instead of the Son…

Thanksgiving represents what it's like to be an American because on that day my family does something that only happens once a year. A great work of art that has a great impact on my life is the novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickson. The story tells of a cold hearted, selfish business man named Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by his deceased business partner Jacob Marley and three ghosts on Christmas Eve. Jacob Marley who chained tells Scrooge that he should change his way or he will be punished in the after life. Marley beged for Scrooge to be given a chance to change. The ghost’s job is to persuade Scrooge to change his ways to avoid punishment in the afterlife. The three ghosts show Scrooge past, present, and future events that help Scrooge realize he is wrong and changes Scrooge into a better person. The story has had an impact on my life in many ways. The story taught me that a person’s behavior is a product of their past. If a person is unkind, it is the events that happened in their past that has made them who they are. It’s a reminder that showing compassion toward unkind people can make them a happier. The story has also taught me to treat people with kindness and respect. Lastly the story has taught me to always help the less fortunate because a little kindness can change a person's life.…

In this essay, I will analyze how the main protagonist in A Christmas Carol transforms from being a mean and spiteful character, to the generous man at the end. Charles Dickens set the novella at Christmas time in the 19th Century. I will analyze the language he used, the atmosphere and the tone of his writing, when portraying the characters in a time of terrible poverty. Then I will also be evaluating the style and form of the story, the use of imagery and how I think the imagery might help me with the understanding of the story and characters. Finally, analyzing the social, historical and cultural features which are implicit and explicit within the text, and summarizing how relevant the issues raised in ‘A Christmas Carol’ are present in today’s multicultural society.…
