Christopher Character Traits
Throughout the book, I noticed that Christopher wasn't afraid to be himself. He has his own

mindset that is different from most of the characters in the book, and he expressed that very well

throughout the book. Christopher knows that he is different from others, but he doesn't really

don't much about it. Most of the characters didn't understand why he acted out in those way but

since he couldn't help himself, so he learned to love himself for who he is. I honestly think

Christopher loves himself for who he is, and wouldn't want to change himself. For example on

pages 106-107 Christopher’s mother writes about a time they went Christmas shopping together.

She states in the letter to Christopher “ Do you remember

Christopher wasn't embarrassed because nobody knows now he

feels towards certain things, and how his mind works. Christopher likes the fact that nobody

knows that because he loves to be alone. He never said it in the book, but Christopher likes being

different, he accepts the fact that he is different because different is good.

In a way that I am different from others is my allergies. I am different from other people because

some people don't have allergies. Allergies are “a damaging immune response by the body to a

substance, especially pollen, fur, a particular food, or dust, to which it has become

hypersensitive.” In my case, I get really bad allergies towards cat fur, dust and spring time. The

way it damages my body is by making me sneeze a lot, my eyes start to get very itchy, red, and

watery, and also my nose starts to run. My experience from being different from others is that I

can't really play with cats like them because my allergies get really bad, and I love cats. On a

level that I can relate to Christopher is not that high. He goes through much more things than I go

through with my allergies, but I can say that I'm not afraid to be myself just like him.

Genetic mechanisms influence type 1-hypersensitivity with strong hereditary linkage regarding the IgE response to allergens, which are usually environmental. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is the primary antibody mediating this reaction. It is produced by plasma cells and circulates in small amounts in the blood. It usually takes repeated exposure to cause significantly high levels of IgE in the blood. Environmental pollutants may play a role by increasing mucosal permeability and increasing antigen entry into the body (Copstead & Banasik, 2013). The chief effector cell of type 1-hypersensitivity is the mast cell even though they are many others. These mast cells are found in loose connective tissue and they are covered with IgE receptors and are filled with vesicles or granules containing vasoactive, proinflammatory chemical mediators that produce inflammation when released. The IgE antibody binds to the mast cell surface receptor are presented to passing antigens. The initial onset of the type 1-hypersensativity is the cross-linkage of two IgE receptors to one antigen on the mast cell. This leads to an increase in intracellular calcium that results in immediate, massive, local mast cell degranulation of preformed proinflmmatory mediators. This release causes the inflammatory response (Copstead & Banasik, 2013). Once the mast cell is coated with IgE…

Through out the book, Chris is prompted to make many small decisions in order to determine how he will live the rest of his life. From the moment he decided to go onto the road from Virginia to the West Coast, then landing in Alaska, he made small mistakes due to ignorance to fine details. During the most part of the book, Christopher McCandless is struggling without himself knowing of it. Many people he sees and meets along the way have warned him about the dangers of traversing the wilderness, alone with very little supplies and experience. After journeying into the deep Alaskan wilderness, Chris's actions show that with ignorance to small details, suffering will soon follow.…

In high school he was quite outgoing, most people only had nice things to say about him. Though there were some people who saw Chris’ darker side. One of cross country teammates recalls that Chris would get extremely upset when he would do poorly at a meet. He never showed his anger but instead just kept it inside. There would be times were Chris would just keep to himself. His sister remembers, “he was very to himself. He wasn’t antisocial—he always had friends, and everybody liked him—but he could go off and entertain himself for hours. He didn’t need tots or friends. He could be alone without being lonely.” (107)* In college he became more introverted. He began to live a more ascetic lifestyle and stopped contacting his friends. One of his college friends recalls that he went to visit Chris and to see how he was doing but when he stepped into his apartment he was shocked to see that his apartment was very bare. It only had a mattress and a few milk crates. Chris was going through somewhat of a crisis during this point of his life. The revelation of his father’s affair surfaced and he increasingly grew more and more upset with how society…

Some cannot wait to become adults, while others wish nothing more than for time to slow down. Wanting to grow up and being forced to out of necessity have many different effects on a young mind. Christopher wants nothing more than to receive his A level math and be like any other boy his age. He has never seen himself any more challenged than other children, often thinking of himself as superior to them. Unlike the others, Christopher feels he thrives in solitude and loves to be on his own. “When I was asleep I had one of my favorite dreams... and in that dream nearly everyone on the earth is dead” (Haddon 198-199). Christopher has no realistic knowledge of how to fend or care for himself, but as far as he knows,…

Allergic rhinitis affects more than 1.4 billion people worldwide and is the condition where the immune system recognizes an intruder which in this case is called an allergen. The immune system responds to the allergen by releasing histamine and chemical mediators, and these typically cause symptoms in the nose, throat, eyes, ears, skin and roof of the mouth. Pollen in the air causes seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) which happens in different parts of the country during different times of the year.…

We are looking at peanut allergy. Peanut allergy is a common allergy that can cause life threatening allergic reactions. One of these severe allergic reactions is called anaphylaxis. In the case of peanut allergy, when the person comes in contacts with peanuts their body becomes sensitized to it and affects the whole body. The first symptoms of going into anaphylactic shock are typical allergy symptoms such as a runny nose and skin rash. Then after about thirty minutes more serious symptoms will occur such as coughing, wheezing and problems with breathing. If untreated this shock can cause death (Henochowicz, n.d.).…

The body’s first line of defense is the epithelium. In order for the body to display hypersensitivity after inhaling pollens, pollens need to penetrate the airway epithelium first. Pollens have cysteine and serine proteases to do this by disrupting tight junctions (1,2). They get taken up by dendritic cells (DCs) which are important antigen presenting cells that detect foreign substances and help in activating innate and adaptive immune responses against these substances leading to the release of inflammatory cells like eosinophils, neutrophils, and macrophages, which are the cells responsible for the nasty symptoms that come with allergy.…

In Chapter 229, having made the difficult trip to London and found his mother, Christopher has what he calls one of his “favorite” dreams. Since the dream is Christopher’s fantasy, the fact that he identifies this dream as a favorite implies that it fulfills some of his deepest wishes. First, without anyone else around, Christopher would not have to have any social interactions, which he finds confusing and uncomfortable. He would also not have to deal with crowds, which frighten him, and no one would touch him, which he also greatly dislikes. Significantly, the only people left alive in the dream are people who Christopher says are like him, meaning people with the same condition. If only people with the same condition remained alive, Christopher would be a typical person, rather than an atypical person as he currently is, revealing Christopher’s strong desire to no longer feel like an outsider.…

An allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system. Symptoms include red eyes, itchiness, and runny nose, eczema, hives, or an asthma attack. Allergies can play a major role in conditions such as asthma. In some people, severe allergies to environmental or dietary allergens or to medication may result in life-threatening reactions called anaphylaxis. Food allergies, and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees are more often associated with these severe reactions. Not all reactions or intolerances are forms of allergy.…
