The Truth About Christopher Columbus
By Sheila Figueroa
Long ago there was a man named christopher columbus. He lived in spain but was born in
Republic of Genoa, Italy in 1451. Columbus began sailing as a teenager. As he got older he was certain that by sailing west it would be a faster way to get to India. After his idea was rejected in portugal he went to spains king Ferdinand and queen Isabella. They really liked this idea and gave columbus the money for his voyage.
Before his trip to what he believed was india in 1492, his first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean in 1476 nearly cost him his life. Columbus’s ship was attacked by French Privateers off the coast of portugal. His ship was burned and Columbus had to swim to the portuguese shore.
Columbus later participated in several other expeditions to Africa.
In August of 1492, Columbus left spain in the Santa Maria, with the Pinta and the Nina alongside. After 36 days of sailing, Columbus and several crew men set foot on an island, that is now the bahamas, thinking it was india. To greet them were timid but friendly group of natives who columbus named Indians but really were Native Americans. The Indians were open to trade with the sailors exchanging glass beads, cotton balls, parrots, and spears. The europeans noticed bits of gold the natives wore for adornment. This is why they came here, for gold and spices.
Columbus promised the king and queen to bring back gold and spices, thats why they were so intrigued with the idea of him traveling to india. In return to bringing back these goods, they promised him 10% of the profits and governorship over new found lands, and the fame that would go with the new title. When he saw the indians wearing bits of gold and he assumed they knew where all the gold was. Columbus was a bad man and so he took some indians as captives and forced them to show him where the gold was. If they failed to bring him gold they were to be killed.
