Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in the republic of Genoa, Italy. Christopher Columbus sought to find a way to the Indies to find gold and spice. After receiving significant funding from Queen Elizabeth and King Ferdinand, he set sail on August 3, 1492 with three ships, the Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria, with 104 men. The voyage he took to find gold and spice led him not to Asia but to the discovery of America which wasn’t the place he expected to arrive at. Christopher Columbus is responsible for the death of the Tainos because he used the kindness of the Tainos to his benefit, ordering his men to enslave and mistreat the Tainos, and his bad governing skills.…
t the time when the United States was a new nation, there were a number of issues that needed to be addressed in order for the Union of states to become a working country. In a short period, the North had become more progressive and industrialized. There were larger urban populations and the issues that faced northern areas were different from those that faced the South. When new territories were added to the nation, it was politically relevant that they were added in such a way that the balance of power was maintained. The Compromise of 1850 addressed this balance. The Compromise was a group of five laws that addressed slavery and overturned the Missouri Compromise. The climate of the time quickly becomes one of the northern states against…
Alas, in the midst of our exchange, Columbus became extremely furious. His pale skin went from white to boiling red in rage. I had no clue why he was so frustrated, when just a second earlier he was the happiest person on earth. He shouted at his men, but I couldn't understand a word he said. The only thing I knew was that we had done something wrong, so all I could say was, “Sorry,” over and over again.…
Christopher Columbus day should not remain a holiday because it is just another event on the calendar to keep track of and it could make some native American tribes aggravated if it stays. Even if Columbus day isn’t as bad as it seems, the people have the right to want to get rid of it. Although some people will get mad if this day leaves, they should know that “Columbus was a cruel slave trader who brought about the mass killing of native people.”. Columbus day was supposed to be a day when America was found, but others go deeper than that and want to get rid of it. All people, Americans and Native Americans get to have a say in this, whether it be to stay or it is to…
John Winthrop's speech to the Massachusetts General Court he outlines two types of liberties in early America. He calls the two liberties Natural liberty and civil or federal liberty. In John Winthrop’s speech he describes that if men follow natural liberty they will become more and more evil over time and eventually become worse than beast’s. If men are allowed to do as they please man and authority cannot co-exist. Men who follow natural liberty are a great evil to truth and peace “Which all ordinances of God are bent against, to restrain and subdue it.”…
Was Christopher Columbus really the hero that everyone perceived him as? Or was he really just a scoundrel who was not accepting of others? And should we celebrate Columbus Day or should we not? Most are innocent to the facts about Columbus believe that Columbus is a hero, but I’m not that naive. I believe that Christopher Columbus was more of a villain than a hero. Although he discovered the Americas and he followed his dreams, there are quite a few historical events and pieces of evidence that proves him to be more of a villain than hero. He regarded the Native Americans as inferior and cruelly, as well as his crew, he was inept at math and at being governor, and he was disrespectful and selfish towards the king and the Native Americans. I don’t know about you, but I believe those are the makings of villain, and not the makings of someone who should be celebrated.…
Is there a difference between Christopher Columbus and Lewis and Clark? These three men all searched on for new land. Christopher who claimed to have discovered America found a land that was inhabited by many Native Americans. Lewis and Clark also found new land inhabited by many Native Americans. The difference, the way Christopher Columbus worked was he slaughtered many to clear the land, while Lewis and Clark did no such thing. Christopher Columbus discovered North America and was expecting to find a lot of gold. He promised the King and Queen a land full of gold, so he was expected to bring back a ton of gold. The problem was the land was scarce of gold, so since the Native Americans looked up to Columbus as if he was their God, he took advantage of this and put many of them to work as his slaves looking for gold. When they didn’t cooperate he had his men kill them, or cut off arms. Christopher chose to get rid of these Native Americans with a bloody and inhumanely way. Lewis and Clark did not choose a bloody and violent way to take the land from the Native Americans. They tried to cooperate with the Natives. Only until later did the Native Americans get treated poorly, when they were removed for their land, after they were ordered to live like the Europeans. When you hear about Lewis and Clark, you find little evidence of violence done by this expedition. Unlike the Christopher Columbus expedition.…
Christopher Columbus has been viewed as a hero for several centuries. Children in elementary schools all over the nation are taught that he discovered America. However, there were many other people who were indigenous to the land already and the Vikings arrived in America almost 500 years before Columbus. Christopher Columbus, as it turned out, was responsible for widespread genocide; he permitted his men to rape, murder, mutilate and enslave indigenous people. The evil deeds of Columbus far outweigh the few accomplishments he achieved. It doesn’t make sense for the United States to recognize this supposed Christian with a national holiday, so America should stop celebrating Columbus Day.…
Some will argue that Columbus was not the first European to discover America as the Viking, Leif Ericson, probably found a Norse village on this Newfoundland almost five-hundred years earlier. They will also argue that the Native Americans discovered North America about 14,000 years before Columbus was even born. As it says in “change.org” there is DNA evidence now that suggests that some Polynesian adventurers sailed dugout canoes across the Pacific and settled in South America long before even the Vikings did. Much research has been put into this, and even though this may be true, demolishing this holiday would almost crush America as a nation.…
Columbus Day celebrates the so-called discovery of America. Even though, Christopher Columbus killed many native Americans and started the slave trade. We should not celebrate Columbus Day.…
The first thing that came to my mind when reading over the first writing assignment was a funny memory trick that I learned when I was younger. Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen-ninety-two. In remembering this small rhyme, I decided to choose Christopher Columbus as my ocean explorer. At first, I did not know much about Columbus, other than the fact that he sailed the ocean in 1492. So in writing this paper, I decided to do a little research. I used not only our textbook, but the website: “The Columbus Navigation Homepage”.…
In the movie The Last Conquistador, there is a controversy going on between John Houser, a sculpture who successfully attempted to create and mount the tallest bronze equestrian statue in the world, and people who funded the building of the statue and Native Americans living in Texas. The Native Americans don’t want the statue of a long-forgotten Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate, branded a terrorist and a genocidal architect by some, to be built. The Native Americans think that Juan de Oñate is anything to celebrate. He killed thousands of the Native Americans’ ancestors and took their lands. While the Native Americans have their points, Houser and his helpers are trying to help out the city of El Paso, Texas. El Paso Texas is one of the poorest cities in the United States. With Houser Building this statue, Revenue from tourists would help the city out. I honestly think that in this situation, everyone needs to understand where everyone else is coming from. The statue was not meant to be demeaning to the Native Americans in anyway and it is a beautiful piece of art that is very well sculpted. But then again, Houser should have done his research and understood how bad of a man Oñate was and realized that putting that statue up where eighty percent of the people living there are of Native American decent wasn’t a good idea. Even though the Oñate statue is beautiful, I believe it should have never gone up in the first place.…
Secondly, most people think that by celebrating Columbus Day we are celebrating the discovery of America, which is not true. How can America be ever discovered by him if there were people living there? America was already exiting and you can’t discover something that already exists. Christopher Columbus did not find North American on purpose and he was not the first to find it either. Leif Ericsson of the Viking found North America first. So technically Christopher Columbus didn’t discover America so why should we have a day just for him? It just doesn’t make sense to have a holiday for someone but there is no really reason behind it.…
Christopher Columbus is one of the most well-known explorers in history. Christopher Columbus had many voyages that he had done throughout the years. There was several letters that he had written, one regarding his first voyage was to Luis de Santangel that explained what he had found, and the way he felt during his voyage. Another was his fourth voyage to Ferdinand and Isabella, in which he shows sorrow and regret for his discoveries. In the letters that Christopher Columbus had written his tones were very distinct and different. It is hard to think that it is even the same person wrote the two letters. Columbus made a complete change from arrogant to humble in his attitude.…
