Christopher Columbus Diary Entries 1492
August, 1492. We set sail early this morning. Early for me anyway. The wind was strong and felt good in my face. I’d never been on a ship before so I was hoping this would go well for me, so I would get picked more often to go. ‘Course, I only have Mamá that is my family and it would break her heart if I died out at sea.
The rudder of ‘da Pinta slipped so we had to make an unthought-of stop at the Canary Island. Columbus ordered the other captain to stay there and try to fix it while we went to Gomera to find another ship but alas, none were available. We started to sail back but something caught my eye.
A fiery explosion and the volcano Tenerife had erupted. A mighty sight I’ll tell ya, red lit up the sky as far as I could see with my one

“We want to turn back. We’ll throw you overboard! Turn and go back! Let’s turn around and go back to England, we’ll be safe!” I slapped ‘em all.

October, 1492. We sailed about 2,150 miles. More birds came and I saw a boy hit one with a stone. The birds I recognized were petrels and terns. It’s surely dead by now. The people of the Nina fired a cannon and raised a flag, to show they found land. Captain called the island we landed on San Salvador. We found natives and they called it Guanahani. I’m not sure how Captain took this but it’s okay I guess. Trina found the island first. I’m guessing that Pinzon was unhappy. I knew he wanted to find land first. saw Captain and I along with the crew went to Fernandina. Captain’s still stuck with gold in his mind, and right to do so as well, else our Highnesses might get mad at us and kill Captain. Anyway, the trees were very different from ours. The fruits and herbage were more brightly colored. The fish are very differently colored and different species too.
Cap'tain left to go explore on one of the islands this mornin’. He thinks we’re in Cuba.

November, 1492. I checked the hull earlier today day and the rest of the ship as well to see if there was any

One of Christopher Columbus’s main goals that he wanted to achieve in his lifetime was to discover a trade route to the Indies. Although he knew he could achieve this goal he knew it would follow with obstacles and challenges he would have to face during this voyage. One of the main detriments that he came upon was the inability to restock food and water. Under those circumstances, he asked King Joao for help. King Joao denied his request and used the idea as his own, only to find out that it would fail for him in the end. Finally he convinced King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to advance him the money for his voyage for food and supplies. As the voyage began other problems began to occur, the compass needle no longer pointed north, they had to persevere through the Sargasso sea that was filled with thick gulf weed, and the trade winds stopped and put the sailors in fear of no return home. These things didn’t stop Christopher Columbus he knew there was something to look forward to, so he encourage his crew members ensuring them that everything would be okay. He ended up landing in the Caribbean, in what is now Haiti. While landing upon the New World, Columbus and his men found that there was a whole civilization among them. “This time he had an army with him, seventeen vessels and approximately fifteen hundred men.” Christopher Columbus would again sail west, looking to further chart and plot what he believed were islands off the coast of China. Upon returning to the settlement he left on Hispaniola, Columbus found the settlement was destroyed, and the men he left there were dead, this infuriated Columbus. Columbus ordered his men to capture the indigenous people, and force them into labor. He would use his new found labor force to build a new settlement approximately seventy miles away, which he would name Isabella, only to move the settlement one more time, this time calling it Santa Domingo.…

The first one was the Pinta owned by Cristobal Quintero and the second was called the Nina and owned by Juan Nino. Columbus' flagship was to be the Santa Maria owned by Juan de la Cosa. Columbus had a difficult time recruiting a crew because many feared a voyage to the unknown. The royal secretary tried to help by offering freedom to convicts but only four accepted. It is believed that eventually the crew numbered from 90 to 120 men and consisted mostly of experienced sailors with a few government officials. The ships left on August 3, 1492 heading for the Canaries. They then departed into the unknown on September 6, 1492. The Canary Current was a great choice, speeding their journey. On October 12, a lookout on the Pinta cried out that he had seen land. A reward of ten thousand maravedis was to go to the man who saw land first, but Columbus acted cruelly, pocketing the money by saying that he had seen land several days before. The ships landed in the Americas on October 12, 1492 after thirty-six days of sailing. Columbus claimed the land for the Spanish and named it San Salvador. The natives were friendly and open to trade with the sailors. The natives were called the Tainos by the Spaniards but soon, all natives were given the name Indians because the Spanish believed that they had landed in the Indies. In the next few months, Columbus took with him a couple natives as guides…
