He sailed a new route he thought would be much faster, but he ended up in the Americas, and Christopher was unaware he had not arrived in India. When he saw the natives of this world, he called them “Indians” since he thought he was in fact, in India. Columbus discovered a group of natives called the Tainos dressed in gold. This made him think there was plenty of gold to go around, so he takes some of the Tainos back with him to Spain where they then became enslaved. The natives also showed Columbus new spices, crops, and ways to grow and harvest food. He took these things and the natives back with him to Spain to show what he discovered, all while thinking he was in India. Later, Columbus made a second voyage to the New World. When he arrived, he discovered that the Tainos had killed the Spaniards he had left behind. Columbus and the other explorers then demanded gold, but the Tainos didn’t have any, so they were enslaved and sent to Spain. The Spaniards then began killing thousands of the natives and within twenty eight years, all three hundred thousand Tainos were gone. The colonists thought the natives would be childish or savages. The first English colony in the New World was Jamestown in Virginia. The fort there kept out the natives and animals. Many of the colonists were “gentlemen” who would not work for themselves, so since a lot of people refused to work for themselves, four hundred colonists died in one winter. The settlers spent their time looking for gold instead of trying to find food. Powhatan’s tribe helped the colonists with this issue for a while. Soon, the colonists thought the Indians were savages and did not deserve to have their own land. John Smith, an Englishman, was saved by Pocahontas, a native American. Many believe that he and Pocahontas were married, but in reality Pocahontas married an Englishman named John Rolfe. Their marriage created a truce between the natives and colonists. Rolfe took Pocahontas had a child and went to England where she was treated like royalty. Sadly, she died in England. English colonists were the only to bring whole families over to the Americas, so they did not marry and have children with natives as much as the French had. The Englishmen did though, also try to convert the natives away from their religious
