Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, also known as Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a type of cancer that affects the blood and the bone marrow. What is a bone marrow? Bone marrow is the soft tissue in the center of the bones that helps to form all blood cells. In CML, the bone marrow produces too many white cells, called granucolytes or myeloid cells. These cells, some of the times called blasts or leukemia blasts, gradually crowd the bone marrow, interfering and destroying the normal blood cell production. They also spill out of the bone marrow and circulate around the body in the bloodstream. Because of the fact that they are not fully matured, they lack the function to work properly in fighting infections. And in an overtime, a shortage
of red cells and platelets have the ability to cause anemia, bleeding or bruising.
