In this text, Hungry for Worship, authors Frank Page and L. Gray write about the hunger for worshipping God that all leaders should possess. In chapter 1, both authors begin the text with the concept of how the body has fallen in love with the method of worship and not the actual act of being in the Presence of God. They briefly paint a picture of the leader of worship bringing forth a golden calf and trying to lead the congregation into worshipping the calf. They compare this extreme scenario with how the body of Christ has gotten in today’s local churches. According to the authors, the leaders and congregation instead of worshipping God have begun worshipping the way worship in each church is presented.…
In “Pleasures of Eating” by Wendell Berry (2014), the author focused on how eating should be considered as an agricultural act instead of an agricultural product. Berry (2014) explained the agricultural act as the awareness of the relationship between what we eat and in which conditions it is produced. Passive consumers and industrial eaters are the words Berry presented to define the ones who consume food without disputing the manufacturing process, the quality and the cost of the product. Furthermore, he claimed that the industrialization and politics of food degrade the quality of our lives since people are nourished expeditiously with low-quality, and cheap food. Berry emphasized on the food industry’s camouflaging strategy for the processes…
The written piece from Food Justice by Robert Gottlieb and Anupama Joshi goes over the issues surrounding access to fresh food, communities of color, dominance of corporations and defines key environmental terms. It is overwhelming to acknowledge the seriousness and desperation that is displayed in the writing of this book. One aspect of the reading that stood out to me is the defining of terms such as food desert and how this term describes the realities of the living conditions of communities of color and my community in particular. The lack of access to fresh food, full-service markets and the congestion of communities of color with fast food chains and liquor stores are information that I am recently being exposed to and knowledgeable about;…
We refer to basic human rights like the freedom of speech and association, liberty, and equal treatment in court as civil rights, because they are fundamental rights that each and every citizen should not be denied on the basis of their sex, race, or religious belief. In the last one-hundred years we, as a human population, have seen many acts of discrimination against our civil rights on a large scale. In Kathryn Stockett’s novel, “The Help” one of those times were brought into light, the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Many say that members of the Lesbian, Gay, Transgendered, and Bisexual (LGBT) community today experience similar discrimination to the black experience of Southern U.S in the 1960’s because of the fight for civil rights, the fact that members are shunned by their area, and how people actively work against the cause that they try to establish.…
Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal. Eric Schlosser. New York, NY: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2001, 383 pp. Notes. $13.95.…
In Eric Schlosser’s “Fast Food Nation” he talks about the truth behind fast food. We never really wonder, when we eat fast food, where it came from, or what we are really eating, or how it came to be sitting in front of us. Well Schlosser uses his undeniable phraseology, his overall facts on the history of fast food, and his brutal honesty to describe and challenge our fast food nation, as we know it. In his book Schlosser argues that the fast food industry utilizes its political influence to avoid its main problems with health issues and its terrible working conditions, all the while greatly increasing profits and its expansion.…
A critical intersectional analysis of the LGBT community reveals there are many layers of discrimination inclusive of race, gender, class and sexuality resulting in an unbalanced distribution of power. In our patriarchal society, the cis-gendered, white, wealthy, gay male holds the most power as this figure aligns most closely to the heteronormative hierarchy of power. This directly results in the agenda of said figure to become the forefront of the LGBT’s political movements. As trans-gendered people, who has consequently have limited access to education, opportunity or wealth are the most marginalized; their basic needs are not met or addressed in the LGBT community. Spade articulates the legal ramifications of the marginalization the transgendered community, “The debates about gender inclusion in the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) or the exclusion of gender identify protection from New York State’s Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act (SONDA) are only the most blatant examples of mainstream lesbian and gay movement’s lack of gender-transgressive populations,” (Spade, :23.1)…
My values and beliefs for this topic came from living here the United States. Growing up here for almost nine years have made me realize that they are some inequality issues that are still a problem and that are being ignore by the lawmaker for example gay marriage not all fifty states are allowing gay marriage to be legalized once and for all. I decided to take a class during my senior year of high school to learn more about social inequality. I decided to take American studies and Ethnic and minorities class. In my ethnic and minorities class I learned a lot about inequalities issues and what exactly was going on in the United States. In my American studies we discussed inequality events that occurred In American a long time ago. I learned about gay marriage, disability rights, women rights, African American rights the list goes on. Slowly I started to realize how unfair the system was and has been. Ever since I Took those two classes my perspective in inequality issues has grown. The lawmakers are not pushing the system to change. The lawmakers are not doing anything to help fight…
As far as the (GLBT) people, they have had a long rough road to travel when it comes to equality. There were only a few attempts within the United States to try and create advocacy groups supporting gay…
When we look back at the way GLBT was looked at it was just as bad as African Americans was looked at. Just like African Americans the GLBT community was subject to discrimination and prejudice. They had to hide who they truly were. In the old days if you came out and said you were gay or a lesbian they thought you had a disease. Without technology they did not know what to do they did not know that it was not a disease but someone’s right of choice. It wasn’t until 1973 until “The American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders (Pearson Education, 2013). Today in America the GLBT community is making a lot of progress when it comes to their rights. Just like women they have had to fight for everything they want. People today tend to look past the fact that you are gay or a lesbian. Their still are some prejudice people and they still get discriminated against but it is getting better. The gay and lesbian movement is doing a great job showing people that they this is not a fade they are here to stay. By doing this they are fighting to be equal. Some of the social issues relevant to the GLBT community are health care, housing, economic support and education. Concerning political issues two that are standouts in this very election and those are women’s right and same sex marriage. The social issues for the GLBT community are mainly based on poverty,…
Many people believe that in order to be healthy in life, you need to choose the right foods and get your daily nutrition instead of eating fast food and processed foods. This leads to a debate whether or not obesity is determined by how we eat or the food industry. Some, like Mary Maxfield believe that if you trust yourself and your body, it will lead to a better path. Others, like Micheal Pollan say that if people don’t eat too much food and eat more fruits and vegetables instead, it can lead to a healthier lifestyle. In Mary Maxfield's article, "Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating", she has several disagreements with Micheal Pollan. She explains that food shouldn’t be seen as a negative thing no matter what you eat. Mary…

“In a praise of Fast Food” is an article written by Rachel Laudan from the book “The Gastronomica Reader.” Laudan grew up on an English farm she studied math, physics, chemistry then a degree in geology. She published several books and lots of articles. At the University of Hawaii, she found the way to bring her passion for gastronomy. She discovered the most amazing food culture she had encounter. All her ideas were pulled up together in 1996 in a book call “The Food of Paradise: exploring Hawaii’s culinary Heritage.” a book that explored how three diasporas had combined to create local food, the grass-roots cuisine of Hawaii.…
Thesis Statement: The Gay Rights Movement dates back to the 19th century. By 1970 gay and lesbian organizations existed all over the United States and in other countries all over the world. Some supporters of the movement would say that our society as a whole has made great strides towards acceptance of homosexuality. However, gays and lesbians are still fighting for equality in 2009. The issues are vast and widespread, with same-sex marriage at the top of the list. In the world that we live in today one might be surprised to learn how many countries are accepting of gay and lesbians, as well as how many are not. The world has made progress within the last decade regarding this issue, but definitely not enough. We need to take steps to protect and balance Gay rights.…
