following through on agreements. Cicero has also explained the other side of it which is being unjust and going against the morals of man and harming people. Cicero tells us that there are two different types of injustice and he says they are ,” the Injustice of those who inflict it, and that done by by those who do not protect victims from injury when they have the power to do so. When a person fired by anger or other violent feeling launches an unjust attack upon another, he is, it seems laying hands on a fellow-member of the community; and the man who does not rebel or oppose some wrong when he can do so, is as much at fault as if he were abandoning parents, friends, or country. Observe that injuries purposefully inflicted to do harm often stem from fear, when man who contemplates harming another fears that if he does not do so, he will suffer some disadvantages.”. There are some historic people that represent both side of this lifestyle whether being just or unjust. Cicero give examples of what unjust person looks like and a historic ruler from Rome is a king named Nero a extremely unjust to the people that he ruled and also his own family members. According to Cicero every human has the choice to be just or unjust it is based off of human nature on which side they are going to choose. Cicero also says that people have the ability to act when seeing an unjust act happen in front of them, and it is up to them to react to the situation. Justice to Cicero is defined as, “ brightest adornment of virtue, the means by which men gain the title of boni…” then he goes to explain the function of justice which to Cicero is, “The foundation of justice is good faith, in other words truthfully abiding by our words and agreements.”. Cicero believe that the just person will be kind and generous to other in proportion to there ability or human nature to do so or wether the person is deserving of you kind act of justice. He also believes that people should be acted justly to depending on someones that deserve it or not. He believe that there is a difference between people that deserve to be acted justly apron or helped in times of need, and there are people that you should help because of there just acts that they perform on there own time that qualifies them to be considered a just person. Cicero talks about this concept of faith with justice a lot in when he describes justice and what it is to him. The concept of faith in one another that if every person can be held accountable for themselves and of others a well then justice will be easier to achieve. Cicero believed in this faith aspect as a key part of living a just life because if you can not trust the man standing next to you and you don't know if they are going to cause harm to you then there needs to be laws. Cicero also believe that if there are to many laws made then there will be less justice. He said this because if there are more laws created then it makes people want to break them and also there are more thing that people can do wrong and be wrongly accused for these unjust acts. Rules and laws play a big part in trying to find what justice is and how people should act. A very famous Cicero quote the says, “ The more laws the less justice” and when he says this he is saying that with more and more laws get made it makes more things for people want to break because it is an act of rebellion to the government. It also indicates that Cicero believed that to many law is a bad thing because then people will fight against some of the laws because some people many or many not agree with every law so they will follow or will not follow these laws. Cicero’s beliefs of how government should be ran is a big part of how he view justice and how it should be and how people should be treated. Cicero believed in the idea of a Republican constitution and that there are three different types of constitution rule by the one, rule by the few, and rule by the many. The idea of rule by the one is a kingship that one person the king is in charge. The idea of rule by the few is a government ruled by the senate and they are in charge. and the idea of rule by the many is a government where the people actually have a say in everything. Cicero believes that the right way for government is to have a balance of monarchical, aristocratic, democratic but that aristocratic should be in the lead of all the power. He believe that this aristocracy the best wisdom and the best guide of the state will be. he also believes that if the democracy become to the point where they have to much of the power that the people will inherently destroy the republic. this is where he gets the idea of if there are to many laws there will be less justice. It all starts from his beliefs of how the government should be ran. Throughout history there have been some famous rulers and people that have proven themselves to be just of unjust.
A historic figure that has proven himself to fall onto the unjust side is a Caesar named Nero. The problem is that if there is a person that is unjust in power they are able to break some of these rules and laws that are made. That is where a Caesar like Nero comes into power and is a very unjust person by the definition of Cicero. Nero has been know to do many different things that Cicero would consider an unjust thing to do to another human. He has harm many people in his time as Caesar and some of those people that he ahas injured or caused harm to are family members as well not even just people that he ruled over. In Suetonius’ book Lives of the Caesars, he talks about Nero and some of the situation that he has proven by the standards of Cicero’s stand to be unjust to other humans. “The he had her killed on a charge of adultery which was so patently false that everyone denied it durning the trial and Nero had to set up his old tutor Anicetus as the witness who was to make up a story and confess that he had raped her through trickery.”. This is a example of Nero causing other people to become unjust and do things that they know should do to another human to cause harm to them.this case show that Nero is using his power to make other people make unjust decisions just because he is in power and that controls them. Cicero believes that this is two of the things that Cicero believed that made a people act unjust. Those two ideas a that the fear of off the person that is telling you do the act. In this case the person that is doing the act is scared of Nero so he follows through with his idea to ultimately get the case to be judged the way that he wants it to be which will not bring the case to true justice. the other thing that Nero show to make him unjust is the Ambition for power which Cicero also claims to be unjust. He is looking for power by
bribing the judge to make a decision that would benefit Nero. There are many different cases where it shows how un just Nero is and how wrongly he treats other human being. He believes that law and rules apply to him because he is a caesar and rules the land and that he can not be told what to do by anyone. He is able to do so because he strikes fear into his people that he rule which is an unjust act according to Cicero. He knows that he is the boss and that he can not be told by anyone what he can and cannot do because he knows that he could just have them killed and not get in trouble for it. Also this shows that people were afraid to stand up to him because he did have this power over all things so they didn't want to stand up to him because they knew that i would just lead to their death. On the other side of the spectrum a man that has been known as one of the most just man come from a early time period then Cicero but he still knew about him. This man is named Jesus and he is well known for being a very just man in the Bible. There are many different stories that tell of Jesus helping other people. The thing about Jesus is that he not only helps the just but he actually helps the unjust as well. “There is a story of Jesus helping a paralyzed person who had been laying in his been for his entire life. Jesus knew[a] what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts? Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’? So I will prove to you that the Son of Man[b] has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” And the man jumped up and went home! Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for giving humans such authority.”. These few verses from Matthew 9 show Jesus performing a. act of justice towards another human being. Jesus has been known through out history to be the most just man alive because not only did he come to this earth and live a life of helping others without sinning but he also died for all of us to live. He is the perfect example for a just human in Cicero’s eyes because he has good faith in what other people say and also listening to a his father which is god and not arguing with the fact that he was going to die for all of us unjust and messed up sinners. The fact that Cicero makes this thing of justice and injustice and how important he make it because of the big impact that makes on the government and also the people that you live with. HE takes pride in this topic and he believes that being a just person is the most important thing in a good life following these standards to make good people with good morals. The fact that we all as people have the choice to make the decision to act in a moment when you see a act of injustice happening in front of you that you cab act upon it and bring justice to the problem. Cicero believes that the human nature is to react to these situations and sometimes we may or may not but that every person has the human nature to act upon a situation like that. There have been people throughout history that have shown both sides of the spectrum the bad being Nero a terrible and unjust Caesar and Jesus that savior and redeemer of man kind the most Just person to walk the earth. The thing that Cicero try to make sure that he get his point across in all of his works especially in his book On Obligations that justice and injustice is something that every one has the choice to choose what kind of person you are, and that is all because of human nature and how we are built to help people in danger. So which side will you choose are you going to be just and help others or be like Nero and strike fear into others to gain power for yourself.
