I believe one good idea for Hispanic Heritage Month would be to expand and seek co- sponsorship from different organizations on campus to alleviate the costs that come along with events and receive different perspectives of how an events should be ran. Also, a greater number of organizations would mean a larger audience and more volunteers and participants to aid with development of an event. Since I’m applying for the Assistant Pageant Director, high quality photos should be taken at the event by asking other students if they have a professional camera, I own one of these type of cameras, and also setting up a photo booth area with a wide range of props. Also, having a hashtag for the event such as #HHMPageant or #MrHSA&MsHSA to increase…

Is Cinco de Mayo really the Mexican Independence Day? While most people mistake Cinco de Mayo for the day that Mexico gained their independence, Cinco de Mayo- the fifth of May- is actually celebrated because on that day the Mexican army claimed a victory over the French army in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Mexico actually gained their independence on September 16, 1810, 50 years before the Battle of Puebla occurred. The Franco-Mexican War began in late 1861; which was an invasion of Mexico by the Second French Empire. In 1861, Benito Juárez became president of Mexico. The country was in financial trouble and he was forced to put his debts on Spain, France, and Britain’s governments. Because of this, the countries sent naval forces to demand a reimbursement. Both Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico, but France decided to take…

This holiday is a big deal in Puebla because the battle took place there but in other places it really isn’t much of a big deal. This holiday is mostly celebrated in the United States, by Mexicans and Americans. This holiday is kind of ignored in Mexico but it is still celebrated north of the border in states like California and Texas. This holiday is celebrated with parades, dancing, and festivals. It is usually celebrated in US cities with large Mexican populations. Traditional food is sold and served during the holiday. This holiday is now more about celebrating the Mexican way of life instead of remembering the battle that occurred about 150 years ago.…

If the United States took land and did such things to Mexico, why were they the ones to declare war on Mexico? The Mexican War began in 1846 after Mexico opened fire on Americans north of the Rio Grande, which happened to be the Texas-Mexico border. As a result of this event, President Polk declared war between the two countries, although, due to prior events, it seemed more reasonable for Mexico to be doing so. The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because they robbed land from them, brought slaves into Texas, and occupied land on the Texas-Mexico border.…

Imagine fighting for freedom against a country that won’t listen to you and treats you with cruelty. You don’t have much military power, so this other, more powerful country helps you gain independance. However, as soon as you win, the country that helps turns around and puts you in the same situation, just with them instead of the original country. This is what it was like in the Philippines! Before the Spanish-American war, the Philippines were a territory of Spain, along with some other countries like Cuba and Puerto Rico. Spain mistreated the people of these territories. They moved them into camps, that had shelters with no roofs. If they didn’t get there in time, they were executed. The United States stepped in and went to war with Spain for the independance of these territories. When we won the war, we got control of these…

The Mexican-American War served as catalyst that channeled the divisions between the North and South and the division within the political parties. The war was fought over American expansion near Mexican territory, which created major tensions that resulted in full blown war in 1846. The war was very controversial because it raised sectional tensions between the different regions within the United States. Many in the North were opposed to the war because they believed it was being fought to expand slavery. Further, some viewed it as unconstitutional; one of the most famous protests was when Henry David Thoreau refused to pay taxes to show his opposition. When the war was finished, there was further division as to what the Unites States should…

Los Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday spanning two days and three nights. During this holiday, families gather to welcome the souls of the people that have died. They see these days as crossroads between the living and the dead. The Day of the Dead originates from ancient Aztec culture and although Christianity has influenced this celebration over the years, the Mexican people, like the Aztecs, still exhibit no fear of death and it is talked about openly and in everyday life. Ofrendas are a traditional element in celebrating the Day of the Dead; even their symbol of death, the calavera, helps to show that there is no denial of death in this culture. This is witnessed especially throughout the festivities.…

The Mexican war was a war worth fighting for a few reason. The first key reason that we should have fought this war is that it was in the best interest of the country at the time and the many people in the U.S. believed in manifest destiny which was the belief that the expansion of the U.S. was justified and important. Another reason that this war would have been justified is that at the time was that mexico was a fairly new country. They had only gained independence from spain about 20 years before the mexican war. The U.S. didn’t think that Mexico was capable of controlling the amount of land that they claimed as theirs. It said in Document A that, “Mexico never can exert any real government over such a country” A third reason that this…

The Battle of the Alamo is one of the most famous and talked about battles to this day in the American military. I remember it like it was yesterday walking the dusty streets with my matching Colt six shooter revolvers strapped on, with my black cowboy hat pulled low over my forehead. Everyone knew there was a huge battle brewing ever since the Texans had claimed their independence from Mexico. First of all let me clear something up, the Alamo was a church and not a fort as everyone thinks it was. The name was Mision San Antonio de Valero, it was used as a missionary for Christians and Native Americans who converted over to Christianity. The reason we chose this particular spot was where it was located, out in the wide open we didn't figure…
