For my theme, I decided to move away from the culture and journey aspect as I had just finished a topic on Africa, which I didn’t enjoy much. I decided to embark on fairytales. To start with I researched Aladdin, where I found images and drew Princess Jasmine, I then developed her hair barrel piece into a repeat pattern. I then thought that I couldn’t reach my full potential with this particular fairytale, so I moved onto Cinderella, as I found it more interesting.
To start my research off with Cinderella, I obtained a few images from the Internet and the ones, which stood out to me the most, was the carriage and the high-heeled shoe. I decided to sketch them on the next page. I developed my carriage by making a pom pom, which represents the wheel. I also used a gem styler to replicate the neckline on Cinderella’s blue dress. …show more content…
I developed my shoes even further by producing a repeat pattern and doing some artist research on Christian Louboutin, which I enjoyed.
I made an appliqué sample of the classic Louboutin shoe underneath heat-gunned organza. I then drew a shoe incorporating circles from my carriage, to develop my circle I used a range of techniques such as organza, bonda dot, glitter dots, polyprint, 3D liner and slashing. Another aspect of one Louboutin shoe was leopard print so I decided to create a felt sample, and draw some leopard print down the side of one page. I think this looked
effective.
Another artist I decided to research was Jenny Packham as she was an iconic wedding dress designer and I wanted to look into dresses e.g. Cinderella’s ball gown. I created a beading sample and a lace one, which are techniques that she often uses.
I then moved on to Andy Warhol, as I thought I could look into mice as this links quite well to Cinderella. I used my carriage and then my own photography of shoes to create an Andy Warhol type image on the computer.
I then researched Rachel Hutchinson, as I liked her techniques such as the textiles yo-yo. I then drew and created a sample of my carriage in the style of Rachel Hutchinson.
To conclude my artist research I decided to research Jeffery Fisher, as he is an interior designer – a style that I had not researched into yet. I liked one of the wallpaper patterns; therefore I drew it and created a polyprint, and couching sample.
At this point in my sketchbook, I decided to design and create a cushion which I think went quite well as I incorporated many elements of development and technique use which had been used throughout my sketchbook. I then thought I would make a small panel, which also included many things, and my carriage as the focus point, however I think I could have improved the panel as the measurements weren’t quite right.
I decided to take a modern take on my carriage and research into cars – especially Audi’s, as I like them. I drew 2 in the style of my carriage and then transfer printed them. I like the way they turned out as they look very detailed and neat.
At this point, I felt it was time to start designing my final piece. I first designed a panel with the centre being the Jenny Packham carriage style drawing I drew. I then started to build around it using key elements from my development for example, shoes, leopard print, the wheel and Jeffery Fisher design. I decided to do another design, as I don’t think that this one included as much from my sketchbook. I designed another one, which included my carriage car development, poly print, and elements of my Jenny Packham research, leopard print and my photography of shoes.
My final piece was very difficult to assemble, as it was so large. I think it could have gone better as I decided not to include the leopard print, and use image-maker of an Andy Warhol version of my shoes. The image-maker could have gone better as some of the images weren’t that clear. I liked the organza in the top corners and also the beading I did on a bonda dot background which all links to my sketchbook.
Overall, I think this topic went much better than Africa, and I think in some areas I did much better such as experimenting compared to recording. To improve next time, I would put more detail into my drawings and link more development and techniques into my final piece. I also found myself running out of time, so I would spend less time on things which were more time consuming.
