Cinematic Adaptation Of A Single Man
This cinematic adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s novel, “A Single Man” (2009) combined the efforts of fashion designer and newly, as a director, emerging Tom Ford, talented cast and crew, who created a breathtakingly beautiful and haunting work of art. The film itself, as well as individual cast and crew members, have received numerous prestigious nominations and awards for their stupendous work. The story was adapted to the screen by Tom Ford with the help of screenwriter David Scearce. It follows the protagonist George Falconer (Colin Firth) on his last day, in which his life takes a pivotal turn from the previously all prevailing somber and dour cloud of darkness that followed the death of his one and only love and life partner Jim (Matthew …show more content…
His application of meticulous, fashion film reminiscent, precise and magnificent cinematographic techniques are the reason as a result of which the film garnered critical acclaim from the 66th Venice International Film Festival. Every scene, every shot in this film is ravishingly lovely. Ford has exhibited the ability to put together an illustrious mise-en-scéne. From the sophisticated and refined costuming to the eminent setting of the glass house, Ford pays fastidious attention to details in the production design, furnishing, cars, hairstyles and make-up of 1962 also according to IMDB even George’s pistol is a Webley revolver, a standard firearm used to British and Commonwealth troops from 1887 to …show more content…
In previous performances such as “The King’s Speech” and “Pride and Prejudice”, he has proven to be an excellent actor. Nevertheless “A Single man” challenges his artistic finesse in ways other movies have not been able to bring to fruition. Firth, a heterosexual man in real life, was challenged with the endeavour of having to express the intricacies of love within a sensual, thrilling and genuine same-sex relationship. Through various close up shots, the nuances of his excellently performed facial expressions and gestures are revealed. They are an accurate and honest portrayal of the emotions George, who is resplendent with the emptiness and loneliness he is left with after Jim’s death, experiences. Through all this Firth manages to depict the occasional, escaped snippets of the protagonist’s warmth, shining through in occasions during which he cares for others around him. In addition to Colin’s grand acting, Julianne Moore, who played the role of Charley, George’s best friend, and one-time lover, contributed with an exceptional interpretation of a dipsomaniac yet glamorous

For my paper I decided to take a look at two movies that I highly enjoy watching Starship Troopers and Pride and compare and contrast them with a theory that we have learned this semester. I chose these films not only for their stark differences in plot, but for more importantly the various ways male characters are depicted in these films. I will be analyzing the bulk of male characters in each of these movies through the eyes of the masculine theory. As you know the masculine theory deals with the various ways that male roles are depicting in the film and sometimes can even be used to see how woman are depicted in films if they are depicted in a masculine way. When analyzing a film this way you need to look at how males are represented in…

Sean Penn’s main protagonist, Christopher McCandless is at first wounded by the materialistic lifestyle and the emotional lack of interest expressed by his parents, that he experienced going up. Penn shows the McCandless families materialistic nature through the use of flashbacks, specifically a scene with his parents kissing happily in their new luxury car — a symbolic reference to material success and wealth. This scene is then crosscut with chaotic, cropped shots of domestic violence and abuse. The superficial lives of his parents trigger Christopher’s need to seek change and discovery away from the urban life and landscape of the city and to “walk alone…into the…

The ability to take on board the help of others and to maintain strong support networks to accept the present and move on to a seemingly better future has been convey through the character of Coral. In the play ‘Away’ by Michael Gow, Coral’s journey is derailed when she abandons her husband on the Gold Coast and travels down the North Coast of New South Wales. During her short stay, she participates in the re-enactment of ‘Stranger by the Shore’ with Tom. On page 54, Gow states in a stage direction, ‘He removes the towel…He lifts her and holds her as she takes a step forward’. Here, Gow has utilised the behaviour of characters, which is a central feature of mise-en-scene, to symbolically illustrate how Tom assists Coral in working towards overcoming her emotional and social insecurities. Unlike Roy, whose insincere approach to Coral reinforced her emotional and social alienation, Tom’s approach to Coral, which is guided by his own tragedy, is empathetic. By displaying an empathetic approach by actively assisting Coral rather than belittling and insulting her, Tom was able to positively assist Coral in changing and transforming both emotionally and socially.…

Would the average person want to live a life of fan worship, fame, and glory but live a short life? This is how the Roman gladiators lived their lives. Gladiators were Romans who would fight against each other, sometimes even to the death for the purpose of entertainment. An average gladiator was a slave, former slave, or condemned prisoner, but there were some who chose to live such a life. Some chose to live like this for gladiators got paid every time they fought and they could keep any rewards or purses of money they received. Even though the rewards came with the chance of being killed at a young age or becoming seriously injured, some people were desperate for money.
