TOPIC: ‘Kazan uses a range of cinematic techniques to reveal the emotional and moral struggle of Terry Malloy’

‘On the Waterfront’ is an, award winning film, directed by Elia Kazan, whose audience is faced with Terry’s moral dilemma and emotional battle, that forces them to think about their own beliefs about what loyalty, love and friendship mean. The films protagonist Terry Malloy, portrays the tough-guy attitude, in order to try protect himself to from the degradation that surrounds him. Trapped by poverty and lack of education he experiences a moral and emotional struggle throughout the film. Kazan uses a range of cinematic techniques including setting, costuming, symbolism and so to convey Terry’s battle. Kazan also focuses on the relationships and friendships that build throughout the film.

He had suffered from low self-esteem, since he was compelled to lose the prize-winning fight by the mob. He also repeatedly called himself a "bum” putting himself down. After dealing with the death of his brother, Terry decided to stand up for what he knew was right. By doing this, he represented the other dockworkers, and above all, for the people he cared about the most; and for this, he gained the respect and loyalty that he deserved. His emotional and moral struggle shows how he faced a tough decision, about whether he should confess for taking the life of an innocent man that he, his brother, and his closest friends had been involved in.     On the Waterfront is a film directed by Elia Kazan which illustrate the difficulties that the protagonist, Terry Malloy, has struggled in the early period of 1950s. Terry Malloy was a former prize-fighter who was bought up in a dark and brutal world of men. Since his career has ruined by the corrupted union which was controlled by Johnny Friendly, Terry was being recognized as a ‘bum’ within both the longshoremen and the mobs. This poor environment has created a false philosophy within Terry himself, ‘Do it to him, before he does it to you’. However, after he met Edie and Father Barry, Terry realized how wrong his philosophy was. Thus Terry, with his remaining conscience was able to stand up against Johnny Friendly and gain a new understanding of himself and the world. The world of Terry Malloy is brutal, uncompromising and stifling. Due to the environment where Terry was bought up, he has seen many human cruelty within the Waterfront such as the corrupt union's power over the longshoremen and how his ambition got took away for just letting Johnny Friendly to win a small bet. Due to these factors, Terry found the peace and safety only occurs when he obey Johnny Friendly’s orders. In Terry’s understanding of his world, is cruel and selfish, “hey, you wanna hear my philosophy of life? Do it to him before he does it to you”, he knows about the mob and he found out the only way that he can stay safe in the Waterfront is follow all the order from Friendly. He felt guilt after he knew he was a part of the murder of Joey Doyle, but the dark side of him always reminding him to keep his mouth shut about the truth. When Edie ask him which side he’s within, he answer that:”me? I’m with me,Terry.” that shows his view and he does not want to be related with the mob, and in some stages, he did not want Edie think that he is involved in the murder.     Kazan does not only use Terry Malloy by establishing him a hero in On the Waterfront to value individual conscience or moral growth above community loyalty or sense of obligation, but also other characters like Edie and Father Barry. This film focuses on the balance between our moral conscience, and our need for survival. It explores how much we are influenced by our own need for survival compared to our sense of justice.     Elia Kazan’s masterpiece, “On the Waterfront” tells the story of Terry Malloy’s battle between reason and will. At the film’s centre lie’s Terry’s choice between remaining “deaf and dumb” about the corruption lead by Johnny Friendly, or becoming a ‘stool’ pigeon and testifying against him. Terry’s ultimate decision to testify against Friendly demonstrates his transformation from being a “bum”, lost in his morality, to a hero and leader for himself and his fellow longshoremen. His choice to “rat” on Friendly is brought on by his newly awakened conscience, not anger. This conscience is a result of his developing love for Edie Doyle, and the pressing care of Father Barry. Together they push him towards making the morally correct decision. Terry’s anger in the film arises from the death of his brother Charlie, “one of [Friendly’s] own”. This however, it is not the reason he testifies, but rather a driving force. If Terry’s decision sparked from anger, he would have ignored Father Barry’s plea to “fight [Friendly] with the truth”, and sought revenge on Friendly. Instead, Terry’s conscience prevails and he listens to Father Barry.…
