The cinema In the scene that I have chosen Mma Ramotswe is talking to someone in the cinema. This someone that she is talking to is named Nandira. This was the daughter of that dad who had hired her to watch her. Mma Ramotswe confronts her ad asked what she was trying to do with her staying out so late. After words she started telling Mma Ramotswe what was going on and why she was sneaking around behind her dad’s back. She also told her who the boy is that she was seeing. Come to find out the boy she saw seeing was not a boy at all, it was someone she just made up so her dad can trust her to pick her own husband. The part of the story does relate to many problems that are happening in Africa. There are only two that really stand out to me in this scene. One of the problems that relate to this is that not many people use the old traditions of Africa like Mma Ramotswe like then Nandira wants to have space, do what she wants to, and hang out with boys. That is not something someone with the old traditions like Mma Ramotswe had done. The second problem in Africa would be arranges marriages. Nandiras dad wanted her to have an arranged marriage and that’s why she was sneaking around meeting boys. Many people in Africa have arranged marriages and most do not want them like Nandira. The scene of them in the cinema shows a lot about their characters. For Mma Ramotswe it shows a lot about her being understanding and caring. When she is talking to Nandira she shows a lot of sympathy to her when she talks about her dad not letting her do anything and wanting to arrange her marriage. She also shows it by telling Nandira that she will talk to her dad about giving her some space and letting her do some of the things that she wants to do. As for Nandira, it also shows she is a nice girl who just wants her space. It shows why she runs away. Also, why she is keeping stuff from everyone and why she lies. It shows a little bit about Mr. Petal as a father and how he treats Nandira. The way he treats her shows that he is a very traditional man. He is also very controlling, over protective, and not very easy to let go. Here are some of the quotes that relate or show a lot about that scene in the cinema. Something that Nandira says to Mma Ramotswe that shows where they are “I am looking forward to this film.” she said pleasantly “I have wanted to see it for a long time.” When Nandira confronts Mma Ramotswe she says “I saw you this afternoon.” and “Why have you been following me?” Mma Ramotswe asks “Are you going out with a lot of boys?” and she tells Mma Ramotswe everything. “No not really.” “Jack doesn’t exist.” She says to her “I wanted them to think I’ve got a boyfriend.” “I want them to think there’s somebody I choose not somebody they think is right for me.” When they were done talking about what she was doing and what was going on with her sneaking around she asks her “Are you going to tell him?” do you thing that he might let me have a little move freedom?”. Mma Ramotswe tells her “I could try to persuade him.” Nandira says to her “Oh please do.” (Pages 117-119)

The film chronicles the histories of three fathers, and manages to relates and link their events and situations. First is Mitchell Stephens and his relationship with his drug-addict daughter. Second is Sam, and the secret affair he is having with his young daughter Nicole. He is somewhat of a narcissistic character because of his preoccupation with himself and pleasing himself, and his lack of empathy throughout the film for the others in the town. Third is Billy, who loves his two children so much that he follows behind the school bus every day waving at them. Billy is also having an affair with a married woman who owns the town's only motel. On the exterior the town is an average place with good people just living their lives. But, beneath all the small town simplicity is a web of lies and secrets, some which must be dealt with in the face of this tragedy.…

Now, let’s focus on the other main character, Maha, the girl who gave the proposal to go to Chlifa as well as taking care of a baby along their journey. In my eyes, she is an impossibly brave and sensitive girl with a fragile heart. She always pretends to be strong but in fact she has been hurt by Karim again and again. She fell in love with Karim in a silent way and she is willing to be his soul mate during their…

He wants people to appreciate the diversity in culture of each African country, but “your reader doesn’t care about all that, so keep your descriptions romantic and evocative and unparticular” (Wainaina 543). Wainaina wants people to reject not only generalizations about Africa, but the inevitable appropriation and fetishization of the cultures that follow. In a sense, the satirical angle of the text makes us feel uncomfortable because it points out what we as a western society have done wrong to represent a large population. Wainaina wants us to understand that the lives of those in Africa are not to become our sob stories or our life stories, that we should not be the saviors or the revealers of a…

Much of the early colonial evidence about Indians’ behavior under the influence of alcohol comes from the reports of political officials and priests. The statements lean towards excessive drinking and general indictments of pulque and tepache as the cause of all sins and social problems, including idolatry, rebellion, poverty, illness, violent crime, infidelity, and incest. Spaniards generally thought of a Mediterranean ideal of drinking as being able to “hold” their liquor without losing control of their dignified demeanor and “natural reason.” From the history of Teposcolula, Spanish wine and the movement of non-Indians in the countryside exposed native peasants to certain models of drinking behavior, which at times were rejected. When a…

Catherine Pigott came from a Western background. In Africa, she experienced a dramatically different culture. At first, it must have been very difficult. There was little about her that appealed to the Gambian sense of femininity. She was far too thin by those standards. Consequently, she could not dance as they danced, dress as they dressed, or eat with the relish and gusto becoming of a Gambian woman. Frankly, she was too thin. Her slim physique represented everything synonymous with poverty, drought and starvation. Her body was a cause of sadness for those who looked upon her. If she were to remain in Gambia, she would need to adapt to these rather foreign cultural expectations.…

    Odette Peace Corps Report

I have no fear that my experience will follow the path of Odette’s. I do not believe that conflict is something that is simply a part of Africa, as some of my family members appear to believe. Conflicts and violence have occurred throughout the world in many different regions and societies, but somehow the world continues to label such conflicts as “them” and “we” would never engage in such actions, even though history strongly disagrees. I am excited for the opportunity to experience life in another country, one which is very much unique from my own home. Comparatively, I also realize that life in a different culture will require adaptability, hard work, open-mindedness and good judgment for the experience to be an educated and safe one. Although Odette’s story is one of ominous foreboding, I believe that fear of what could be should not deter one from pursuing their goals as giving into fear is what often creates what it…
