Circling The Enemy Painting Analysis

The painting that I am choosing to talk about is called Circling the Enemy by Z.S. Liang. What this painting means is that basically in the mid-nineteenth century, there were problems with the residents of Native Americans got more aggressive as many more settlers continued their expedition in the Westward Expansion. But, what I thought this meant at first when I saw this was how the Indians were fighting for their land because settlers were moving west and got to their land. What I think this picture represents or from what I see is that it has a pretty dark story behind it like it represents war or something that has to do with fighting. What I also see is that it uses more dark and neutrals colors as well. It has very fine details to where you can see the veins coming out of the Indians, the facial expressions on their faces, and the muscles on the horse’s legs from running.

John Gast made this painting because of the Manifest Destiny. There is very little information about him because he wasn’t that well known or why he did these paintings. The painting was made in 1872. What I think this painting means when I first saw it was that it probably means peace between the settlers and Indians because there looks to be an angel in the sky with a bible which means that the angel and the bible is holy. What I like about the picture is how the angel seems to create peace between them and how everything looks peaceful. The colors that I think were used were more cool colors and how everything looks more natural and it looks elegant. The settlers and Indians seem to not mind each others company because the angel or whatever it is, is there to create peace between them. Far in the distance it looks like a storm is passing by or is going through something. You can also see the settlers moving west as if they are going to move in somewhere near the
