Many believe that CitiBikes are a detriment to NYC, and are a misuse of money, but I feel this is incorrect. The Citibike Program should not be discontinued in 2016 for three main reasons: first, they greatly help the environment by reducing our carbon-footprint and by making the city healthier; second, they help improve civilian safety by making drivers more acclimated to bikers; and lastly, its success has created jobs and generated cash, so removing it now would not make sense.
Citibikes reduce our carbon emissions and make New Yorkers healthier. New York is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with nearly eight million people, and forty six percent of New yorkers own cars. Through Citi Bike use, car owners have been able to reduce how much they drive, saving gas and slightly alleviating the amount of traffic in the city. In addition to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, Citi Bike gives New yorkers an easy way to exercise while still getting around.
